After two challenging years Proud Fathers For Daughters is back! As we emerge resilient from the COVID-19 pandemic, Project Nanhi Kali invites you to the seventh edition of its annual charity event, Proud Fathers For Daughters. Even in the 21st century, in our patriarchal society, there are millions of girls who are discriminated against solely because of their gender. Proud Fathers For Daughters was conceptualised in 2014 in the aftermath of the Nirbhaya tragedy, with an aim to change attitudes towards girls. It features India’s marquee photographers, who shoot some of the most endearing photographs celebrating the special bond between a father and a daughter. Since 2014, Proud Fathers For Daughters has featured over 1200 portraits of fathers who have proudly stood by their daughters for the world to see, while supporting the education of over 2500 underprivileged girls in India. This year, we have a line-up of leading celebrity photographers including Tejal Patni, Rafique Sayed, Atul Kasbekar, Colston Julian, Jaideep Oberoi, Prasad Naik, and Tarun Vishwa, who are donating their time and expertise to capture beautiful father-daughter portraits. The registration cost for the event will go towards supporting girl child education through Project Nanhi Kali. We invite you to participate in this exclusive event and give underprivileged girls a chance to have a brighter future.

She wakes up at 5 in the morning. The alarm clock is her best friend and worst enemy because although it ensures she is not late, it reminds her of the long day and hours of labour ahead. From unending household chores to the countless responsibilities she shoulders, every day is a fight of perseverance. This is not the story of one little girl, but of However, to clear this gloom, Anand Mahindra started Project Nanhi Kali in 1996 with a convention of empowering young girls and women through education. One such girl is Manisha Bairva, a native of Radhapura village, Sheopur district, Madhya Pradesh. She comes from a farmer’s family stricken by poverty. Supported by the sole earnings of her father, the family of 6 people struggles to make ends meet. Even though her parents always wanted to secure a good education for their children, their financial situation made it extremely difficult. But Manisha’s life changed after being enrolled into the Nanhi Ka...

Nanhi Kali Anand Mahindra founded Nanhi Kali in 1996 out of the conviction that empowering women through education would have a tremendous positive impact on the nation in the long run. Girls' education correlates with a reduction in child and maternal mortality, improvements in child nutrition and health, lower fertility rates, better economic production, and female empowerment. Through Nanhi Kali, Mahindra hopes to play a small but significant role in shaping India's future by empowering girls through education. Jointly managed in partnership with the Naandi Foundation, Nanhi Kali is the flagship program of the KC Mahindra Education Trust. We select students based on multiple criteria, then create a comprehensive sponsorship to address both learning and financial challenges. We offer academic support classes to help students master math, science, and language concepts, and we defray the hidden costs of education, including uniforms, school bags, clothes, shoes, and more. Individual or corporate donors sponsor each girl and receive regular progress reports in return, helping to promote understanding and empathy. Sponsorship is only USD 60 for a student in grades 1-5 and USD 90 for a student in grades 6-10. The Mahindra Group independently supports the education of 29,702 of the 78,338 underprivileged girl children who participate in Project Nanhi Kali.Within the period of a single year, third party assessments have indicated an improvement in learning outcomes ranging fro...

The Impact Of Anand Mahindra's Nanhi Kali Project

Anand Mahindra at a Mahindra Pride School in Chennai. These schools focus on skill development of students out of colleges and polytechnic institutes and prepare them for jobs From the beginning, Hajiya Begum’s future looked bleak. Her mother could not forgive her for being a girl and deserted her. Her father died when she was young. It was left to her grandmother, who worked as a maid in a Hyderabad suburb, to raise her. Hajiya’s education remained in doubt, given that her grandmother made a meagre Rs 2,000 per month. And then, in 2006, everything changed. Hajiya, then in Class 4, became a Nanhi Kali. She continued her education and went on to score 93 percent in her Class 10 exams; her photograph appeared in local newspapers. In the 2014 Board of Intermediate Exams (equivalent of Class 12), she scored 944 out of 1000 marks. Her dreams too have grown: She now wants to work in a company like Microsoft. Over a thousand miles away in Sonthwa village in the Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh, girls don’t study beyond Class 5. They are typically married off at 13. Parina Meena, born to parents who could barely rustle up Rs 2 lakh a year working on agricultural farms, faced a similar eventuality. Parina loved studying but dreaded the day she would be married off. But her fears dissipated when she became a Nanhi Kali, on reaching Class 4, in 2006. She went on to get 92 percent in her Class 10 exams. She now wants to become an engineer. Hajiya and Parina are two of the over 10000...
