Mumbai, Jun 21: Hundreds of Shiv Sena workers gathered outside the Shiv Sena headquarters in Mumbai on Tuesday to express solidarity with party president Uddhav Thackeray battling the rebellion by Sena minister Eknath Shinde who has gone incommunicado with some MLAs of the party and camping in Surat. The Uddhav Thackeray-led government in Maharashtra appears to be in crisis after Shiv Sena minister Eknath Shinde and some MLAs of his party have gone incommunicado and camping in Surat, a day after suspected cross-voting in MLC polls, putting a question mark on the stability of the MVA dispensation. Hundreds of party workers started assembling at Shiv Sena Bhavan as news of Shinde's rebellion broke in the morning, most of them irate over the challenge thrown at Chief Minister and party president Thackeray. "This protest will continue against whoever betrays t...

SC verdict on Maharashtra political crisis today. CM Shinde, 15 other MLAs face likely disqualification

Mumbai: The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court is Thursday expected to deliver its judgment on the Maharashtra political crisis. Back in March of this year, the apex court had reserved its verdict on a series of cross-petitions submitted by the factions of Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde. These petitions pertained to the crisis that had taken place in the state last year, following a split within the Shiv Sena party, as a result of which Shinde had become the chief minister and formed a government with the BJP in June of 2022. Among the petitions submitted, one seeks the disqualification of 16 Shiv Sena MLAs — from Shinde’s faction — who had initially rebelled against Thackeray’s leadership. The rebel group led by Shinde had, in turn, issued a notice against the Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker, Narhari Zirwal, which stated that any action taken against the dissident Sena MLAs under the Constitution’s 10th Schedule (which deals with disqualification on the grounds of defection) could not be pursued since a notice for Zirwal’s removal was already At present, the composition of the house is as follows: the BJP holds 105 MLAs and has the support of seven independents. The Shiv Sena has 40 MLAs and the backing of 10 independents, as well as 1 MNS MLA. This comes to a total of 163 seats for the government, which is well over the halfway mark of 145. The opposition camp has 53 NCP MLAs, 45 Congress MLAs, 16 Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MLAs, 2 from...

Maharashtra political turmoil: List of Sena MLAs likely with Eknath Shinde

Mumbai, Jun 21: In a major setback for the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government, Shiv Sena leader and cabinet minister Eknath Shinde along with several MLAs have gone untraceable, a day after the ruling Maha Vikas Agahdi (MVA) suffered a setback in the state Legislative Council polls by losing one out of the six seats it contested. • Balaji Kalyankar • Tanaji Sawant • Eknash Shinde • Prakash Anandrao Abitkar • Sanjay Pandurang • Abdul Sattar • Srinivas Onega • Sanjay Raimulkar • Mahesh Shinde • Vishwanath Bhoer • Shantaram More • Sandipan Rao Bhumre • Ramesh Bornare • Chinmanrao Patil • Anil Babar • Shambhuraj Desai • Shahaji Patil • Mahendra Dalvi • Pradeep Jaiswal • Kishore Patil • Mahendra Thorve • Gyanraj Chowgule • Bharatshet Gogavale • Balaji Kinikar • Sanjay Gaikwad • Suhas Kande The BJP on Monday won all five seats it contested in the state Legislative Council elections for 10 seats, while Congress candidate and Dalit leader Chandrakant Handore lost, in another setback for the MVA after the Rajya Sabha polls earlier this month. Two candidates each of the Shiv Sena and NCP won, while the Congress managed to bag just one seat. Ten Council seats were up for grabs and 11 candidates were in the fray for the elections, which came days after the Rajya Sabha polls, which saw the BJP handing an embarrassing defeat to the Shiv Sena-led ruling coalition.

Make or break for CM Eknath Shinde, as Maharashtra eagerly awaits SC verdict on disqualification plea against 16 Shiv Sena MLAs

• • • • Make or break for CM Eknath Shinde, as Maharashtra eagerly awaits SC verdict on disqualification plea against 16 Shiv Sena MLAs Make or break for CM Eknath Shinde, as Maharashtra eagerly awaits SC verdict on disqualification plea against 16 Shiv Sena MLAs While the Shinde faction has started showing signs of nervous excitement, its alliance partner BJP has kept its fingers crossed. With the Supreme Court verdict on the disqualification plea of 16 MLAs belonging to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena expected in the next few days, Maharashtra politics is poised for plenty of twists and turns. While the Shinde faction has started showing signs of nervous excitement, its alliance partner BJP has kept its fingers crossed. The Opposition Congress, NCP, and the Shiv Sena (UBT) are equally awaiting the big decision, which they believe will determine the next course of political action in the western state. Broadly, two probabilities are being discussed in the corridors of power and the legislative secretariat of Maharashtra. The first possibility is that the MLAs are not disqualified. Instead, the Supreme Court refers the matter back to the Speaker of the state legislative assembly. This will help the Shinde-Fadnavis government to retain the status quo. The second probability is the Court disqualifying the 16 MLAs including Shinde. In such a situation, Shinde will have to immediately resign. Thus, setting in motion the entire process of new government formation wit...

Maha alliance in trouble? BJP MLA lashes out at Sena over Shrikant Shinde's remarks

The war of words between the two alliance partners in Maharashtra broke out after Shrikant Shinde hit out at BJP local leaders accusing them of engaging in selfish politics. ALSO READ | Shrikant Shinde's remark was triggered by BJP leaders' move to pass a resolution not to support his father Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Hitting out at the Shinde faction, saffron party leader and MLA Sanjay Kelkar claimed that no one can win in Thane district without the help of the BJP. "Be it Thane, Kalyan or Palghar, wasn't all these Lok Sabha constituencies once owned by the BJP," Kelkar asked his party cadre during a meeting of Maha Jan Sampark Abhiyan in Thane. Meanwhile, without taking names, Shinde camp's spokesperson Naresh Mhaske pointed out that when senior leaders make decisions, street leaders like us must recognise our limits and must speak within those limitations. "Be it Shiv Sena or BJP, everyone has benefited from power," Mhaske said. ALSO READ | It all started after Kalyan's two-term MP Shrikant Shinde had offered his resignation after the resolution of not supporting Shiv Sena was passed by the local BJP unit on Friday. "I personally do not aspire for any post. Senior leaders of the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance will take the decision of who to nominate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections," Shrikant Shinde said.
