Toyota teases Land Cruiser's US return

Facebook post by Toyota USA - June 2023 The Land Cruisers and Land Cruiser Prados have traditionally been closely related, though Toyota has differentiated Prado versions by giving them a more serious off-road focus. The current Prado features additional driving modes that are specifically suited to various terrain, and this is likely to be the case with the new generation, judging by the new Overtrail and Overtrail+ modes featured in the 2024 GX. The GX is also equipped with full-time four-wheel drive, a 2-speed transfer case, and a Torsen limited-slip center differential as standard, so it's still meant as an off-roader. The new GX, and thus also the new Land Cruiser Prado, uses Toyota's TNGA-F body-on-frame platform, which is also found in the 300-series Land Cruiser and its Lexus LX twin, as well as the Sequoia SUV and the latest Toyota Tundra and Tacoma pickup trucks.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser: Everything You Need to Know

Toyota However, Toyota did not say they were abandoning the Land Cruiser nameplate altogether. Their initial statement said they would "explore future products that celebrate the Land Cruiser's rich off-road history" and told enthusiasts to "stay tuned for future developments." Those future developments may happen more quickly than anticipated — perhaps as soon as the 2024 model year. Here's what you need to know. Multiple reports suggest that a Land Cruiser return could be quite soon. TFL, citing a Toyota source, Automotive News reported that the vehicle If the vehicle is due to arrive in 2024, we could expect a reveal as soon as late 2023. Toyota teasing the vehicle's return in June could indicate an earlier timeline. Automotive News and TFL both have Toyota basing the new American Land Cruiser on the next-gen Land Cruiser Prado (Toyota's smaller, cheaper Land Cruiser). Toyota would presumably drop the "Prado" for the American market. Japanese reports The Lexus GX has been a twin of the Land Cruiser Prado, traditionally. So Yes. Toyota has too much brand equity in "Land Cruiser" not to use it, especially when off-road SUVs have never been more popular. The J200 model had its issues — bloated body and price point — that turned off enthusiasts. A lighter, more off-road-oriented and less expensive "Land Cruiser" freed up from the constraints of being the "flagship" SUV should sell much better. A Land Cruiser that starts between $50,000 to $60,000 would still leave Toyota ro...

The Toyota Land Cruiser Is Officially Coming Back to America

As with the Lexus GX, the new Land Cruiser Prado will be based on Toyota's TNGA-F body-on-frame platform. Expect the same 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 making 349 horsepower, 479 lb-ft of torque, and paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Lexus GX gets locking differentials in the center and at the rear axle, so we'll likely see a similar setup in the Land Cruiser.

Toyota Land Cruiser Name Officially Returning To The United States

The rumors were true – Toyota is indeed bringing back the Land Cruiser nameplate to the United States. A five-second clip published on social media is accompanied by a message all but confirming the moniker is hitting stateside once again: "Did you really think we'd be gone for long? The legend returns." As for the video itself, it shows vintage badges used by the venerable off-roader throughout the years. That's all we get for the time being but it's enough to get excited about the LC's return. Since there are zero details about what shape it will take in the United States, all we can do is speculate for now. According to a report published last week by Automotive News, Toyota isn't actually bringing the LC300 that has been around for a couple of years in other markets. If you want that SUV, you'll need to step up to the mechanically related Instead, Toyota USA is allegedly planning to sell the next-generation Land Cruiser Prado. The smaller go-anywhere SUV could drop the "Prado" suffix in North America and ride on the same body-on-frame platform as the fullsize Land Cruiser. It will have a great deal in common with the recently unveiled

Toyota Land Cruiser Raised from the Dead, Will Return to the U.S.

Lexus The new mid-size GX was conceived as a Lexus from the beginning, but we think it's entirely possible that it could also provide the basis for the next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, which is sold globally as a smaller version of the full-size LC as well as the GX's corporate counterpart. Toyota could then drop "Prado" from the name and sell it in America as just Land Cruiser. This speculation is further backed by a Automotive News, who made similar claims citing a person familiar with Toyota's plan. That's all we know for now, but stay tuned as more information on the Land Cruiser's U.S. return is expected to trickle out over the next couple months.
