Traffic Mess Worsens At City Entry Points

CHANDIGARH: With severe traffic jams choking entry points to the city, the UT administration will take up the matter with neighbouring states. For assessing the severity of the problem, UT adviser Dharam Pal will visit and survey these entry points. Pal said, “We will also take up the issue with the neighbouring states in the inter-state coordination committee.” The problem is severe at the Zirakpur-Chandigarh entry, where traffic snarls sometimes stretch for several kilometers and people are stuck for hours on end. The stretch connects the city with Delhi, Haryana and other states. Even though a flyover exists at Zirakpur for passage to Chandigarh for traffic coming from Ambala side, a number of traffic choke points have still developed on the stretch. Even before the traffic headed towards Chandigarh reaches the flyover, it gets stuck at choke points at McDonald’s crossing and VIP Road entrance. At the other end of the flyover, the construction of an underpass has created major traffic snarls. For traffic coming from Zirakpur, Patiala, Panchkula and other areas coming to Chandigarh or going to Himachal Pradesh using the road beneath the flyover, the experience is even worse. The Patiala bend witnesses long traffic jams or slow vehicular movement. “The traffic jams starts as soon as one crosses or reaches the Ghaggar bridge. Thereafter, it is a nightmare at any time of the day, but it is worst after evening. The traffic volume is huge and the carriage is very small with m...
