By Priya Pathak: Your TV bills are going to cost less from February 1, thanks to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) new rules that apply from the same date. According to TRAI's new rules, subscribers are no longer obliged to buy the preset bouquet of channels offered by DTH providers. Subscribers are now free to choose channel in bouquet or on a la carte basis which would bring down the price of your entire TV bill. TRAI has directed the subscribers to create their base package before January 31 to avoid disruption. The new rule brings a concept of base package which would cost Rs 130 maximum and include 100 SD free to Air channels only. Despite TRAI laying down all the rules and regulations on its portal, it can be a little confusing for the subscribers to understand the prices of the channels especially with what the DTH providers are offering or what the broadcasters intent to offer with channel bouquet pricing or individual channel pricing. So to simplify the process of channel selection for the subscribers, TRAI has introduced a new application which will help the subscribers calculate the monthly rental of their chosen channels once the new rule comes in operation. By Amritanshu Mukherjee: Almost a year ago, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had introduced new DTH and Cable TV regulations in view of making the system fairer to all the stakeholders, i.e. both the consumers as well as the broadcasters. However, soon after the new regulations were implemented, consumers started complaining about the new regulations, accusing TRAI of making the TV watching experience more expensive and complicated. Most customers were sticking to the older way of choosing operator curated channel packs. However, TRAI has now made some changes to the DTH rules after consulting with all the stakeholders. The new rules have been designed keeping in mind the consumer as well as the broadcasters, making it more beneficial financially for them. On paper, customers are going to be entitled to lots of benefits in terms of pricing, with TRAI directing operators to offer discounts on long-term plans. However, do the changes necessarily mean your TV bills are going to get cheaper? Or will they stay unaffected? Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has issued amendments to the New Tariff Order (NTO), under which cable operators need to mandatorily provide as many as 200 channels for Rs 153 a month (including taxes) to their subscribers. "TRAI has examined various provisions in detail and accordingly mandated provision of 200 channels in maximum fee (network capacity fee or NCF) of Rs 130 excluding taxes per month," a statement said. Right now, Significantly, the Trai has also capped the amount consumers will have to pay monthly for all free to air channels at Rs 160. The announcement means cable TV users will be able to access more channels at lower subscription price. The operators have been told to announce new pricing structure by January 15.Trai, in a statement, said the decision has been taken to protect interests of all the stakeholders, particularly consumers. It has also been decided that in case of multi-TV homes, where more than one TV connection is working in the name of one person, it will charge a maximum of 40 per cent of declared fee for the second and additional TV connections. Channels declared mandatory by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will not be counted in the number of channels in the NCF.
