Interview: The Treeman

Although not as memorable or prestigious as "The King Of Rock And Roll," or "The Hardest Working Man In Show Business," the title John Ryan proudly holds is still pretty snappy. "I'm 'The Angriest Guitar Player In The World,'" says Ryan aka The Treeman. "It's all in fun, so I'm OK with folks calling me that." In truth, he's got little choice in the matter. In The Angriest Guitar Player In The World, a riotous video that has racked up over 300,000 views since it premiered last summer, The Treeman made an indelible impression, throwing obscenity-laced hissy fits while kicking and smashing guitars in frustration after repeated attempts to nail the opening to one of his original songs, Ghost Of Love. "I was having a bad day," says the 49-year-old Treeman of the video that has made him an Internet star. "My picking wasn't what it should have been, and I was getting fed up with myself. Ghost Of Love is very important to me, and I had to get everything perfect. I guess people responded to my intensity." Even though you didn't play the guitar as a kid, were you always into music? "Of course. I loved the great writers who played the guitar. Bob Dylan, Lou Reed - that's what I'm after, you know? Later on, I listened to a lot of Shane MacGowan. The Pogues are an incredible band. "As to how I got started, I remember I was with somebody who wanted to put a band together. It seemed like a pretty good idea at the time, so I got myself an electric. That was it, then - I was in a band. We ...

Tree Man Syndrome: A Rare Skin Disorder

The condition is believed to be caused by a genetic mutation that impairs your immune system’s response to certain viruses, including a strain of HPV. This allows those viruses to spread. The mutation is believed to be recessive, meaning you must receive the gene from both parents. Your parents can pass along the gene whether or not they have symptoms. Summary Tree man syndrome, or EV is a rare condition that causes several types of skin growths, the most distinctive of which are large, painful, bark-like growths. HPV skin infections, certain genetic mutations, or compromised immune systems can cause it. EV is diagnosed on sight and possibly a tissue biopsy. Treatments include growth and tumor removal and retinoid medications. Bark-like growths may come back, requiring more surgeries. Early diagnosis and treatment lead to better outcomes. • The Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center. • DermNet New Zealand Trust. • Dash M.
