How to trek to Everest Base Camp

The Everest Base Camp trek is on many travellers’ bucket lists, and for good reason. The there-and-back route takes adventurous trekkers to the foot of Mount Everest (called Sagamartha in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan), which is the highest mountain on earth. To actually reach the summit of Mount Everest is a legendary feat, which demands huge sacrifices. At 5,600 meters, Base Camp is no joke, but it does offer a much more achievable goal for people from all walks of life, who still want a glimpse of the world’s highest peak. In fact, the Everest Base Camp trek has become so well-known that there has been controversy in recent years about trekker “traffic jams,” littering, and potential limits on numbers of trekkers permitted per year. Coronavirus and Everest Despite its ultra remote location and bounty of fresh air, the Everest region was still impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. In March 2020, both China and Nepal closed their borders and canceled the 2020 Everest climbing season. In November 2020, Nepal reopened borders to trekkers in a very limited capacity. While most non-citizens still cannot enter the country, trekkers can now seek prior approval and special permits via their trekking company for the spring 2021 trekking season. Stay up to date with current travel restrictions by checking your country’s travel advice. What's it like trekking to Everest Base Camp? Aside from breathtaking scenery, travellers to the region can experience unique local culture by v...

How To Prepare For A Trek: Our 10

UPDATED: This blog was originally published on February 18, 2015. Sure, you can turn up at the foot of Without at least some pre-trip training, or a good basic level of fitness, trekking is hard work. Let’s be real – it’s hard work anyway. The toll for a great trek is paid in sweat. Sore calves and aching quads are badges of honour, with blisters and lost toenails marks of pride. But in return, you get some of the most untouched, pristine and jaw-dropping scenery on the planet. And you know what? The more you train for your epic hike, the easier it’ll be. Photo by Kieran Wallace And you don’t have to be an Iron Woman/Man to climb to 1. Start walking now (it’s never too early to start training) This may seem like the most obvious step to start with (pardon the pun), but you’d be surprised how many people don’t do it. The best way to prepare for a really long walk? Do some really long walks. You should start with small-ish distances and work up to the length you’ll be trekking on your trip. When you start your training, leave a day in between each walk to let your body recover. But as your body gets fitter, try to do back-to-back sessions each day – it’ll help build your stamina for the relentless nature of a ten-day trek, where you won’t have the luxury of rest days. Ideally, you want to be able to walk 4-6 hours – comfortably – before you leave. CHECK OUT OUR RANGE OF SMALL GROUP HIKING ADVENTURES HERE 2. Himalayan trekking summer camps for children

Having taken over 8,000 children trekking in the Himalayas over the past decade, we have seen that just one exposure to a trek can change a child’s entire outlook and approach to life. On the trekking summer camp, children go on a trekking adventure and climb a high summit in the Himalayas. Over the period of 10 days, they trek from camp to camp — backpacks on their shoulders, trekking poles in their hands — and explore the outdoors at close quarters. Not only do they go on a trek, but the program is also designed to impart rare life skills. We bring these learnings through methods of experiential learning. These life skills are otherwise difficult to imbibe in regular school life. So if your child is between the ages of 8-16, this is an adventure you want to send them on. You will see recognisable changes in them, lasting all the way into their adulthood.
