The region shook again three days after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake epicentred in Nepal left six people dead in the neighbouring country. The earthquake measuring 5.4 was epicentred in Nepal 212 km southeast of Joshimath in Uttarakhand. The tremors were felt in the Delhi-NCR region at around 7:57 pm. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said the epicenter of the earthquake was in Nepal. "The depth of the earthquake was 10 km below the ground," it said. Earlier, strong tremors were felt across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and across north India late Tuesday night after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Himalayan region near Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand along the Nepal border, killing at least 6 people. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said the epicenter of the earthquake was in Nepal, about 90 km east-southeast of Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand, and it struck at 1.57 am Wednesday. ALSO READ: Strong tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby cities including Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram and even in Lucknow. The Himalayan region in Uttarakhand and adjoining Nepal has been experiencing earthquakes of lower magnitude for the past couple of days. At least 4 tremors in 30 days, why is Delhi NCR rocked by repeated earthquakes?

The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter was located 40 kilometers south-southeast of Jurm, in Afghanistan's mountainous Hindukush region, bordering Pakistan and Tajikistan. The quake struck 188 kilometers deep below the Earth's surface, making it felt over a wide area. According to an Associated Press report, 11 people have died in Afghanistan and Pakistan as a result of the quake. But why Afghanistan and Pakistan are prone to earthquakes? Experts have said that Afghanistan is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes due to its location in the Alpide belt, which is the second most seismically active region in the world after the Pacific Ring of Fire. The Alpide belt runs about 15,000 kilometers from the southern part of Eurasia through the Himalayas and into the Atlantic, including the Hindu Kush, the Alps, Atlas Mountains, and the Caucasus Mountains. The boundary between the Indian and Eurasian plates exists near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan. Moreover, poor infrastructure in Afghanistan exacerbates the impact of earthquakes. Many buildings in the country are not earthquake-resistant, and they are often made of timber, adobe, or weak concrete, Dr Brian Baptie, seismologist with the British Geological Survey, commented while speaking to BBC. “It isn’t the geology — it’s just the type of construction. There are no quake-proof buildings. It’s mostly river stones held together with some sort of mortar — and mortar behaves awfully in earthquakes," admitted seis...

The earthquake occurred around 1:30 PM and barely lasted a short while. According to the National Centre for Seismology, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 jolted Doda in Jammu and Kashmir and caused powerful tremors throughout north India. No immediate damage or casualties have been reported as of now. Chandigarh, Jaipur, Jammu and Kashmir, and other regions nearby, felt the earthquake's shocks. Initial reports said that the earthquake's tremors were so powerful that they could be felt in far-off locations including Islamabad, Lahore, and surrounding Pakistani regions. Why earthquakes happen? A slide along a fault (a connection between two tectonic plates) is a primary source of earthquakes; these earthquakes are known as inter-plate earthquakes. Intra-plate earthquakes are those that occasionally take place within tectonic plates. The asthenosphere is a layer that lies underneath the tectonic plates that are seen on the surface of the planet and have long-term fluid-like properties. The asthenosphere convects as a result of the earth's core's high temperature and pressure, which in turn causes the tectonic plates to move. Long-term friction between the plates causes the buildup of strain energy within the faults. ...
