• The Supreme Court said it cannot disqualify Mr Shinde and 15 other MLAs for revolting against then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in June last year. That power will rest with the speaker until a larger panel of judges rules on it. • It also rejected a request to restore Mr Thackeray's government because the leader had chosen to resign instead of facing a test of strength in the assembly. • The court, however, strongly censured then Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, for taking decisions that helped Mr Shinde's faction, saying he had "erred" in concluding that Mr Thackeray had lost the support of the majority of MLAs. • "The governor did not have any objective material and the exercise of discretion of the governor in this case was not in accordance with the law," the court said. • Dodging questions on the sharp comments by the court, Mr Koshyari told reporters on Thursday, “I am not a law student. I did what I thought was right at that time. What can I do when I have someone's resignation?" • Commenting on the verdict, • Eknath Shinde said, "In democracy, importance is given to the majority. Today's decision proves that the government that we formed, we did it legally and constitutionally." His deputy, Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP, said, "You [Uddhav Thackeray] got elected in an alliance with the BJP, and then formed a government with the NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) and Congress. Where did your morals go then? You left ideology for power. Shinde left power...

BJP scared of Uddhav: Raut hits back at Shah

MUMBAI:Hitting back at Union home minister Pointing out that during his 20-minute speech at a rally in Nanded on Saturday, Shah spoke about Thackeray for seven whole minutes, Raut said: "This means that despite splitting the Sena, the fear of Matoshree is still there in BJP's mind. Shah had called Thackeray's joining hands with NCP and Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi government a betrayal for the sake of power. Raut further said: "...Shah and BJP are stuck in the same vortex that he had created for Shiv Sena...they have got caught in a trap of their own making...I can see them becoming Abhimanyu. Thackeray will have to agree even if his party is given just two Lok Sabha seats, says Bawankule

Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Bawankule said that BJP treated Thackeray like an elder brother when it had an alliance with the undivided Shiv Sena. But now, the situation is different, he said, referring to Thackeray and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The BJP leader claimed that the Congress has already laid its hands on the Ramtek constituency, which was earlier with the Shiv Sena, now being headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Thackeray broke ties with the BJP in 2019 after differences cropped up over the chief minister's post. He then joined hands with Congress and NCP to become the CM under the banner of the MVA. But his government fell last year following a rebellion led by Shinde. Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats out of which the undivided Shiv Sena won in 18 constituencies in 2019. Uddhav Thackeray will have to say yes even if Sharad Pawar or Sonia Gandhi asks his party to contest on just two seats as he has no other options left. About claims that a BJP worker named Saurabh Pimpalkar is connected with the death threat to NCP chief Sharad Pawar on social media, Bawankule said that the party worker had only followed the accused on Facebook. He said that neither BJP nor its worker issued any threat to Sharad Pawar on social media. Srinagar: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde Sunday accused the Nationalist Congress Party of promoting dynastic politics, a day after NCP president Sharad Pawar appointed his daughter Supriya Sule as working president. "I will only say that like in the Shiv Sena, Uddhav ji became the CM himself, and made his son a minister, the same is happening in the NCP as well," Mr Shinde told a select group of reporters at the Raj Bhavan here. He called on J-K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. "(Sharad) Pawar was president, and made a working president in the family. This is an internal matter of their party, and I don't have to meddle in that, but it has happened like that only," Mr Shinde said. Asked about his son and MP Shrikant Shinde's remarks that some local BJP leaders in Maharashtra were engaging in selfish politics, the Maharashtra CM said it was a small matter and the BJP has issued an explanation over it. "It was a small issue and it is over now. The president of Maharashtra BJP, Chandrashekhar Bawankule has given an explanation on that and I don't feel there is any need to say anything else on that," Mr Shinde said. Asked to comment over the political situation in Maharashtra, Mr Shinde said when he returns to his state, there will be a lot of time to discuss it. "I am in Kashmir right now. When I return there, we will have a lot of time to discuss that. I met Manoj Sinha and we had good discussions. I requested him that many tourists come here from Maharashtra, and ...

Stung by SC verdict, Uddhav Thackeray cites ‘moral ground’ for quitting as Maharashtra CM

‘Satisfied with my decision to resign’: Uddhav Thackeray “Even today, I am satisfied with my decision to resign. I did it on moral grounds,” said Thackeray and further cited the grounds on which he decided to relinquish the CM’s office, “The reason I resigned was that the people to whom my father Balasaheb Thackeray and after him, myself gave everything that we could have, the most important is I regarded them as one of my own and trusted them, the same people betrayed us. I could not stand them showing any confidence in me. I wasn’t interested to continue to serve as the Chief Minister with such people who betrayed me. Thus I resigned and I am satisfied by my decision,” said Thackeray. In his first reaction after the apex court decision yesterday on May 11 the Shiv Sena UBT chief asked for the resignation of Eknath Shinde and also stated his resignation was on moral grounds, "They (now Shinde faction MLAs) betrayed my party and the legacy of my father. My resignation as the CM then may have been wrong legally, but I did it on moral grounds. If the current Maharashtra CM and deputy CM have any ethics, then they should resign," added former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray sitting along with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who came to meet Thackeray as a part of his attempt to have a united opposition ahead of the Lok Sabha general elections in 2024.
