Shiv Sena Dussehra Rally: 1 lakh turned up to listen to Uddhav Thackeray, 2 lakh for Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde: Police estimates

MUMBAI: Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena faction on Wednesday admitted that more people attended chief minister Eknath Shinde's Dussehra rally. However, more than 50% of them left Shinde's rally the moment he began reading his speech, it said. The Thackeray faction claimed more than 2.5 lakh people attended their rally while an estimated 3 lakh were at Shinde's. For Thackeray, it was the biggest rally ever in recent past. Uddhav Thackeray, Eknath Shinde accuse each other of 'betraying Sena' at rival Dussehra rallies in Mumbai For the first time since the Shiv Sena's inception 56 years ago, two Dussehra rallies were held simultaneously in Mumbai on Wednesday. For Shinde, too, it was a huge achievement, since it was his maiden rally of such a scale. Police estimate the Thackeray rally was attended by 1 lakh people against 2 lakh for Shinde's. The capacity at Shivaji Park is 80,000 while BKC's is 1 lakh. Shinde had organized food for 3 lakh people. 'Khokasur' effigy An effigy of Ravana is burnt every year at the Shiv Sena's Dussehra rally. This year, the Sena's Ravana effigy was made of 50 khoke (boxes) and party president Uddhav Thackeray called it "Khokasur". The "50 khoke" reference is to the alleged Rs 50 crore taken by rebel Sena MLAs and MPs to join chief minister Eknath Shinde's faction. The effigy made of cartons or boxes with the number 50 written in bold in the middle was burnt at the end of the rally after Uddhav's speech. The Uddhav-led rally was termed as that of loy...

Defer disqualification pleas against Uddhav, Shinde camps: SC to Maha Speaker

Amid chief minister Eknath Shinde vs Uddhav Thackeray, the Supreme Court has asked Eknath Shinde's rebellion toppled the Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra. (File)(ANI) On Monday, advocate Kapil Sibal - representing Team Uddhav - sought status quo on disqualification proceedings. “Please, inform the assembly Speaker not to take up the disqualification petitions until this court hears the matter. Matters won't be listed tomorrow but inform the Speaker,” Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana, told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who was in the court on behalf of the governor. Ahead of the crucial hearings, the court was told that the newly-elected assembly speaker and BJP leader Rahul Narwekar was empowered in law to decide the disqualification petitions pending against state chief minister Eknath Shinde and other dissident MLAs of Shiv Sena. The secretary of the assembly said that the disqualification proceedings shall now be undertaken by the speaker and not the deputy speaker. Last week, as Shinde proved his strength in the assembly, MLAs of the Uddhav camp were also threatened with disqualification. Shinde's rebellion last month did not only lead to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government within two years but has also split Sena. Last week, Uddhav - in a dare - had said that nobody could take away the party's bow and arrow symbol. He had also called for fresh elections in the state. Before the highly anticipated hearings, Shinde had also launched an attack on Udd...

Maharashtra Political Crisis: SC to deliver judgement in Shiv Sena case today. 10 points

The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court is likely to deliver the judgement on the Maharashtra political crisis today i.e. on 11 May. Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud said the bench would be delivering two judgments tomorrow. The five-judge Constitution bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices MR Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli, and PS Narasimha was dealing with the issue related to Maharashtra political crisis. 10 points you need to know: Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar on Wednesday said the current state government has the majority no matter what decision comes out, in comments coming ahead of the Supreme Court's verdict expected soon on a plea seeking the disqualification of 16 MLAs of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. The hearing of the case which went on for almost 9 days saw senior lawyers making arguments. Kapil Sibal and AM Singhvi were appearing for the Uddhav camp and Harish Salve, NK Kaul, and Mahesh Jethmalani for the Shinde camp. During the hearing, Kapil Sibal argued that the call by Maharashtra Governor to call a trust vote was illegal, and whatever happened between the two factions of Shiv Sena was outside the legislature, not inside. He further submitted that the constitution does not recognize any faction whether there is a majority or minority. Kapil Sibal also argued that a political party has primacy in the relationship between the legislature and the political party. The Shinde camp lawyers countered this point and sai...

Highlights: Can't Restore Uddhav Thackeray As Chief Minister As He Resigned Before Floor Test: Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today said that the Maharashtra Governor was not justified in calling upon then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to prove majority in the Assembly on June 30 last year but refused to order status quo ante, saying he did not face the floor test and resigned. In a unanimous verdict on a batch of pleas related to the political crisis that led to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Uddhav Thackeray following a revolt by the Eknath Shinde faction, a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud held that House speaker's decision to appoint Bharat Gogawale of the Shinde faction as the whip of Shiv Sena was "illegal". It, however, said since Mr Thackeray had resigned without facing the floor test, the governor was justified in inviting Mr Shinde to form government at the behest of the BJP which was the largest political party in the house. Here are the highlights of this big story: The Supreme Court on Thursday said it cannot ordinarily adjudicate disqualification petitions against legislators under the anti-defection law and directed the Maharashtra Assembly speaker to take a decision on such pleas against Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and other MLAs within a reasonable period. A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud rejected the submission of the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena that the top court should adjudicate the pending disqualification petitions against Mr Shinde and othe...

Uddhav Thackeray Vs Eknath Shinde Camps' High

New Delhi: The two Shiv Sena factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and his BJP-backed successor Eknath Shinde today went all out in proving who controls the party, with both sides deploying a battery of top lawyers to argue their case before the Supreme Court. Here's your 10-point cheatsheet to this big story: • Team Thackeray accused the other group led by Mr Shinde of "floating a fake narrative to justify their anti-party stand". "All events that followed, including the floor test and the appointment of Shinde as Chief Minister, are fruit of a poisonous tree, the seeds of which were unashamedly sown in the Supreme Court by the delinquent MLAs," Team Thackeray said. • On a question by the Supreme Court on what if 2/3rds MLAs come out of the party, Team Thackeray said the laws in such circumstances require that Shiv Sena factions should be merged or the new group should form a political party. • "They (Team Shinde) have to register with the EC (Election Commission) if they form a new party, but no registration if they merge into another party. But issue is also of balance. 1/3rd are still remaining in the party. The 2/3rd cannot say that 'we are the party'," Team Thackeray said. • "They (rebel MLAs) were sitting in Guwahati (in Assam) and declaring themselves to be the political party. Their purpose is to legitimize defections. Every act that that they have committed is a violation of rules. The government made in Maharashtra is illegal, so all decisions taken by it will also b...
