A view of a Srinagar city- KO File Pic : Abid Bhat City Recommended In The Field Of Creative City Of Craft And Folk Art SRINAGAR: Indian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO (INCCU) has selected J&K’s summer capital Srinagar among the two cities from India for UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) 2021. INCCU is a government body which functions under the Department of Secondary and Higher Education in the Ministry of Human Resource Development with an objective to advise the Government in matters relating to the UNESCO. In an endorsement letter, Under Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, mentioned that INCUU is pleased to endorse the applications for UNESCO Creative Cities Network, 2021 from Srinagar for Creative City of Craft & Folk Art along with Gwalior for Creative City of Music. According to the website of UNESCO, the Creative City Network involves seven creative fields which include handicrafts and folk art, media art, film, design, food, literature and music. Last year, UNESCO designated 66 new Creative Cities, of which southern Indian city Hyderabad (India) was selected in the field of Gastronomy while as Mumbai, capital city of Maharashtra, was designated in creative field of Film. TNN / Nov 10, 2021, 00:12 (IST) Unesco has included Srinagar in the prestigious list of creative cities network in the category of ‘Folk Art and Culture and Craft’, city mayor Junaid Azim Mattu said at a press conference here on Tuesday. Srinagar district is known for its long and illustrious tradition of crafts and folk art. Iconic crafts like Pashmina Shawls, Wood Carvings, Paper Mache and Hand Knotted Carpets were hallmarks of the city, said handicraft department director Mehmood Shah. • Recently, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated Srinagar as a part of UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) • After Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Varanasi and Jaipur, Srinagar is the sixth Indian city to achieve this distinction. Important points: • The Srinagar city has been designated the creative city in the field of Crafts and Folk Arts – only second city in India in this category after Jaipur. • It will not only give global recognition to the Srinagar city but also help it in international funding, tie-ups with craft universities and pitching craft as a product. • With this, the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir (Srinagar) has entered the club of 295 creative cities network across the world. • Every year, UNESCO seeks applications for various cities across the globe for putting them under its UCCN project. The applications in India are routed through the Ministry of Culture. The UCCN Secretariat leads strategic initiatives and flagship projects and conducts the regular activities of the Network. Furthermore, it supports member cities through capacity building activities and materials, mobilizes additional funds, and promotes the Network's visibility and outreach through communication and advocacy. UNESCO Creative Cities Network

The UCCN is UNESCO’s flagship city programme, established in 2004. Its members include 246 cities from more than eighty member States. UCCN brings together cities that have identified culture and creativity as strategic agents in building the sustainable cities of tomorrow, contributing to achievement of the SDGs. The UCCN brings together cities which recognize that culture and creativity promote their sustainable development. The cities pool their resources and knowledge in support of the objectives laid out in the Network’s Mission Statement. The Network covers seven creative fields: crafts and folk art, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts, and music, and promotes intersectoral collaboration across different creative fields. The UCCN supports cultural diversity, for members of all regions and from all demographic, economic, social, cultural and environmental settings. Urban areas are primary laboratories for the development of new strategies, policies and initiatives that aim to make culture and creativity a driving force for sustainable development. 64 cities join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network

64 cities from 44 countries have been designated as UNESCO Creative Cities by Director-General, Irina Bokova. They join a Network at the frontline of UNESCO’s efforts to foster innovation and creativity as key drivers for a more sustainable and inclusive urban development. This network attracts growing interest from local authorities. “These new designations showcase an enhanced diversity in city profiles and geographical balance, with 19 cities from countries not previously represented in the Network” declared the Director-General.
