BERLIN —Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has received a United Nations award for her 2015 decision to welcome refugees into the country. Merkel, who left office last year, was awarded the Félix Houphouët-Boigny UNESCO Peace Prize in Ivory Coast’s capital Yamoussoukro on Wednesday. “All the members of the jury were touched by her courageous decision in 2015 to welcome more than 1.2 million refugees, notably from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Eritrea. This is the legacy she leaves,” the jury By Merkel thanked the jury for making their choice, which “focuses on the fact that war … also means that people have to leave their home countries,” referring to refugees from Ukraine. “We had thought that the time of war in Europe had passed,” Merkel said. “But since the 24th of February of last year, which is when Russia’s vicious aggression on Ukraine took place, we have come to the sad conclusion that that’s not the case. This has shaken Europe to its roots.” In 2015, Germany implemented an “open-door” refugee policy and Merkel said many people throughout the country supported it, showing that Germany could offer a warm welcome. “I express my sincerest thanks to all of those [people] because I consider them to be winners of this prize as well,” she said. At the ceremony, tributes were paid to Merkel and her refugee policy. UNESCO Awards in Science Awards tend to be of national or local scope and attributed to a new generation of scientists worldwide. They involve different types of recognition, such as medals, diplomas, scholarships or fellowships or distinctions at the national/subregional level in consultation with the relevant National Commissions.

General Rules and Regulations

• 1.1 To pay tribute to the action of President Félix Houphouët-Boigny for peace in the world, one hundred and twenty (120) countries sponsored, in 1989, a resolution adopted unanimously by the Member States of UNESCO to establish an international prize for the pursuit of peace. • 1.2 The Prize is intended to honour living individuals and active public or private institutions or bodies that have made a significant contribution to promoting, seeking, safeguarding or maintaining peace in conformity with the Charter of the United Nations and the Constitution of UNESCO. • 2.1 The Prize shall be entitled "Félix Houphouët-Boigny-UNESCO Peace Prize". • 2.2 The Prize shall have a lifespan of six years, which shall be renewable. • 2.3 The value of the Prize shall be $150,000. • 2.4 The Prize shall be financed by the interest earned on the capital constituted by the initial endowment received from President Félix Houphouët-Boigny through the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Foundation for Peace, Yamoussoukro. In the event that the interest earned is insufficient to cover all expenses pertaining to the Prize, the financing of the activities of the Prize will be conducted on the capital, on an exceptional basis, in accordance with the modalities to be defined between UNESCO and the stakeholders/ i.e. the Sponsor, the Patron and the State of Côte d'Ivoire. • 2.5 The full staff support and operating/management costs of the Prize, including ail costs relating to the award ceremony and public infor...

De Klerk, and Jimmy Carter.
