Religious demography of Indian states and territories

As is the case in most countries, population density varies widely across India. The most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, recorded close to 200 million (20 crore) inhabitants in the 2011 census, while the southern archipelago of Lakshadweep had fewer than 100,000 (1,00,000 in India’s number system). Adherents of religious groups also are not evenly distributed across the country. A note on large numbers India uses a number system that differs from the international number system. This report presents numbers in the international system and, in parentheses, the Indian system. The Indian number system uses units such as lakhs and crores and places commas at different intervals than the international system. Some examples of equivalents: International number system vs. Indian number system One hundred thousand (100,000) = 1 lakh (1,00,000) One million (1,000,000) = 10 lakh (10,00,000) Ten million (10,000,000) = 1 crore (1,00,00,000) As a result, religious groups live in a wide variety of local contexts in ways that are not apparent in the national patterns presented above. In some cases, many million (tens of lakh) members of a certain group live as a religious minority in a very large state. And in others, a much smaller number of adherents form a large majority in one of India’s smaller states. As of the 2011 census, Hindus were a majority in 28 of India’s 35 states and union territories, including all of the country’s most populous states: Uttar Pradesh (total population 20...

West Valley senior service providers struggle to keep up with fast

Mitsuko Sasaki of San Jose quilts at the Saratoga Area Senior Coordinating Council in Saratoga, on Monday, June 5. With seniors in Santa Clara County expected to outnumber children under age 18 by the year 2030, senior service providers are challenged to keep up with the fast-growing older population. (Shae Hammond/Bay Area News Group) In the 2010s, Saratoga made national news when it consistently ranked among the top 10 most expensive cities in which to buy a home, eventually topping the list in 2016. But much more quietly, the West Valley city of 30,000 has been trending far above the national average in another category — median age. According to 2020 census data released last month, Saratoga’s was 50.5, nearly a dozen years older than the nationwide mean of 38.8, and outpacing all of its neighboring South Bay cities. The census data showed a graying of the Bay Area in general — with a 38% spike in the region’s senior population over the last 10 years — and in Santa Clara County specifically, where seniors are expected to outnumber children under age 18 by the year 2030. In Saratoga, where the median home price now tops $3.5 million, many of these aging residents are facing not only skyrocketing housing costs but also food insecurity, transportation challenges and more. And as life gets tougher for seniors in the West Valley, it gets tougher for the organizations holding their safety net together, as well. “The number of older adults is climbing. Everybody’s starting to...

World population to reach 8 billion this year, as growth rate slows

The latest UN projections suggest that the world’s population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050, before reaching a peak of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s. The population is expected to remain at that level until 2100. Slowest growth rate since 1950s However, the annual the global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950, having fallen to less that one per cent in 2020. Fertility, the report declares, has fallen markedly in recent decades for many countries: today, two-thirds of the global population lives in a country or area where lifetime fertility is below 2.1 births per woman, roughly the level required for zero growth in the long run, for a population with low mortality. In 61 countries or areas, the population is expected to decrease by at least one per cent over the next three decades, as a result of sustained low levels of fertility and, in some cases, elevated rates of emigration. The “Further actions by Governments aimed at reducing fertility would have little impact on the pace of population growth between now and mid-century, because of the youthful age structure of today’s global population,” said John Wilmoth, Director of the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). “Nevertheless, the cumulative effect of lower fertility, if maintained over several decades, could be a more substantial deceleration of global population growth in the second half of the century”.
