Benchmarks must keep pace with their changing environment. The Bloomberg Currency Indices offer a real time measure of the underlying currencies against a diversified, dynamic basket of emerging and developed market currencies. They include the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index (BBDXY), the Bloomberg British Pound Index (POUND) and the Bloomberg Euro Index (EURO). The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index tracks the performance of a basket of 10 leading global currencies versus the U.S. Dollar. It has a dynamically updated composition and represents a diverse set of currencies that are important from trade and liquidity perspectives. It provides a better measure of the U.S. dollar compared to other indices that do not update their composition and comprise of a handful of currencies with concentrated weights. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index 2021 target weights are effective after the close of business on December 31, 2020. The Bloomberg British Pound Index tracks the performance of GBP versus a basket of leading global currencies. Each currency in the basket and its weight is determined annually based on their share of international trade and liquidity. The U.S. Dollar Index tracks the strength of the dollar against a basket of major currencies. DXY was originally developed by the U.S. Federal Reserve in 1973 to provide an external bilateral trade-weighted average value of the U.S. dollar against global currencies. DOLLAR INDEX, USDX The US Dollar Index (USDX) is an index (or measure) of the value of the United States dollar relative to a basket of foreign currencies, often referred to as a basket of US trade partners' currencies. These currencies are the Euro (constituting 57.6% of the weighting), Japanese Yen (13.6%), British Pound (11.9%), Canadian Dollar (9.1%), Swedish Krona (4.2%) and Swiss Franc (3.6%). The index started in 1973 with a base of 100, and values since then are relative to this base. In terms of strategy, the Dollar Index is widely used to hedge risk in the currency markets or to take a position in the US Dollar without having the risk exposure of a single currency pair.
