Uttarkashi avalanche: 3 more bodies recovered, toll climbs to 19; 10 still missing

Synopsis The avalanche occurred at a height of 17,000 feet on Tuesday when a team of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) was returning after summiting Draupadi Ka Danda II peak. While 17 of these bodies are of trainee mountaineers, two are of their instructors. According to the NIM, 10 trainees are still missing. Vodafone Idea Ltd (Vi) proposes to infuse a total equity of ₹14,000 crore in the near term as part of its business revival plan, said people with knowledge of ongoing discussions. This will see existing promoters Aditya Birla Group (ABG) and UK’s Vodafone Group Plc infuse half the overall amount, they said. Uttarakhand: Avalanche Hits Mountains Surrounding Kedarnath Temple

As per the Tourism Department, so far more than 41 lakh devotees have registered for the Chardham Yatra this year and about 23 lakh pilgrims have completed the Chardham Yatra so far. Out of the total pilgrims, about 7.70 lakhs have visited Kedarnath Dham, 6.38 lakhs the Badrinath Dham, 4.28 lakhs the Gangotri Dham and 3.83 lakhs the Yamunotri Dham.

According to officials, Rakshith K, 26, and Vikram M, 33, were part of a 41-member team of mountaineers from the Uttarkashi-based Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM). They were returning along with their instructors after climbing the peak as part of their advanced training course when they were hit by the avalanche. Uttarkashi avalanche: Toll rises to 26 with recovery of 7 more bodies

The toll from the Uttarkashi avalanche rose to 26 as seven more bodies were recovered on Friday, the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) said in a statement on Friday. Fifteen bodies were recovered on Thursday as a rescue operation in Uttarkashi continued days after the avalanche hit a 41-member team of mountaineering trainees and instructors from NIM. Three members of the expedition remained missing. Rescuers on their way to the avalanche site. (PTI) Twelve people have been rescued so far. Four bodies, including that of ace mountaineer Savita Kanswal, 26, who set a national record by climbing Mount Everest and Mount Makalu within 16 days earlier this year, were recovered on Tuesday. The NIM statement said the search and rescue operation was in progress at the disaster site. The bodies of Kanswal, another instructor Naumi, 24, and trainees Shivam Kainthala (Shimla) and Ajay Bisht (of Almora), were flown from NIM’s advance base camp (13,600 feet) on two Indian Air Force helicopters to Harsil helipad from where they were taken to Uttarkashi district hospital through road due to bad weather. The search for remaining missing trainee mountaineers and instructors was underway. “Bad weather prevails at Draupadi Ka Danda peak,” said district disaster management officer Devendra Patwal. The 41-member group was hit near the Dokrani Bamak glacier when it was returning from high-altitude navigation from Mount Draupadi ka Danda-2 peak (5,670 m) on Tuesday.

AT LEAST four mountaineers were killed and over 30 feared trapped after an avalanche at Draupadi ka Danda-2 (DKD-2) peak in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand on Tuesday. The mountaineers were part of a team of 34 trainees, seven instructors and a nursing assistant from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM). The NIM said the avalanche struck at around 8.45 am, when the team was returning after scaling the peak. A PTI report quoted the NIM principal, Colonel Amit Bisht, as saying that 10 bodies had been sighted, of which four had been recovered. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indian Air Force (IAF) are conducting rescue operations. SDRF Inspector General (IG) Ridhim Aggarwal said six trainees had been rescued so far. “The DKD-2 peak is situated at a height of around 14,000 feet and the NIM base is at around 13,000 feet.
