IPL 2023: KKR’s Varun Chakaravarthy rediscovers form

IPL 2023: KKR’s Varun Chakaravarthy rediscovers form The current season has been one of rediscovery for Varun Chakaravarthy with the 31-year-old already picking up 13 wickets from just eight matches, including seven from two thumping wins against RCB. The most famous example is Sri Lankan Ajantha Mendis, who bamboozled batters for a couple of years before disappearing into thin air. In last year’s Indian Premier League, that fate had seemingly befallen Kolkata Knight Riders’ Varun Chakaravarthy. Where he had scalped 18 wickets en route KKR’s run to the final in 2021, he had just six wickets to show in 2022. Ingloriously, he was even benched for a few matches and soon lost his spot in the Indian National team. The current season has been one of rediscovery for Varun. The 31-year-old has already picked up 13 wickets from just eight matches (average: 1...

How Varun Chakaravarthy shaped KKR’s win

For the bulk of their IPL campaign, Kolkata Knight Riders didn’t find the pitch at Eden Gardens suited to their strength—spin. The average first innings score was bettered regularly, Sunil Narine was finding his feet and KKR just didn’t seem confident enough to put teams in to bat first. Kolkata Knight Riders' Varun Chakaravarthy celebrates a wicket of Chennai Super Kings in a match(KolkataKnightRiders Twitter) From that perspective, Chepauk never offered an iota of dilemma. The pitch was slow to begin with, and got slower as IPL 2023 wore on. Till it worked against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. Fortunately for KKR, Varun Chakaravarthy—the only Chennai player in both teams—was able to make the most of the pitch, tripping up CSK with two vital wickets. Ruturaj Gaikwad was not at all ready for the seam-up leg-break Chakaravarthy bowled at him, getting bowled trying to slog him. Against Ajinkya Rahane—who prefers playing down the wicket—he bowled a dipping slower ball that Rahane miscued to long-off trrying to come down the pitch. CSK knows all about Chakaravarthy, having tested him as a nets bowler before KKR picked him. "It still hurts us,” said CSK coach Stephen Fleming later. “He tortured in the nets for a number of years, but with the auction and the way it is, we couldn't retain him. And the thing is with the Tamil Nadu players all around the different teams, they knew about him as well and we were unable to keep him a secret. But we were very excited by him as a talen...

Fit to fight: Varun Chakaravarthy solves the mystery

For quite some time, the biggest mystery about Varun Chakaravarthy seemed to be his fitness status rather than anything he delivered with the ball in hand. The 31-year-old spinner, who took to professional cricket only in his mid-20s, has a range of deliveries — off break, leg break, googly and the carrom ball to name a few — in his repertoire, but his injury history often meant that he couldn’t get himself to showcase this wide range. PREMIUM Kolkata Knight Riders bowler Varun Chakaravarthy celebrates with teammates (PTI) In 2020, for instance, he was picked in India’s T20I squad for the tour of Australia despite undergoing rehab for a chronic shoulder injury that hampered his ability to throw. He was eventually withdrawn from the squad and replaced by left-arm seamer T Natarajan. A few months later, he was selected for a T20I series versus England but could again take no part after failing a fitness test. It all perhaps added up to the Indian selectors losing patience with the mystery spinner after the 2021 T20 World Cup in United Arab Emirates (UAE), where he had an economy of 6.45 after 11 overs in three matches but failed to pick up a wicket. Shunned after his six T20I appearances for India, Chakaravarthy went on to have his worst IPL season for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022. His 11 matches for KKR yielded only six wickets at an economy of 8.51. He was even dropped from the team for three games as batters seemed to have a full measure of his variations and unusually f...

Varun Chakaravarthy Profile

A TNPL breed, Varun CV has mystery tag strapped around his back, with a bowling action resembling Sri Lankan mystery spinner, Ajanta Mendis. Varun started his cricket career as a wicket-keeper in his school days. Then turned into a medium-pacer as he grew up before quitting a high profile architect job and eventually settled with bowling spin, thanks to his knee injury. In order to experiment variations, Varun demoted himself from second to fourth division in league cricket. That move worked wonders as he picked up 25 wickets and rose to prominence for his unique action which saw Karaikudi Kaalais snapping him up in the TNPL draft for 2017 season and it also acted as a catalyst for Varun being called up to KKR nets session where he worked closely with Sunil Narine and Co. After the conclusion of his IPL net session, Varun slightly remodeled his action and added new dimensions to his bowling. He became a hot property in 2018 TNPL draft where he was the first pick for Siechem Madurai Panthers. Although Varun claimed only 9 wickets in the tournament, his economy and dot ball percentage (4.7 and 52.08 respectively) stood out the most. Overall, he bowled 125 dot balls in 10 innings and was one of the finds of the tournament. In the final, Varun's figures read: 4-1-9-2 and he was one of the unsung heroes behind Madurai's winning triumph. Tamil Nadu selectors wasted no time in selecting the mystery spinner in the TN state side for the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2018/19. After some inten...

IPL 2023: Varun Chakaravarthy has clarity on how hes going to target each batter, says Abhishek Nayar

Chennai, May 15: Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach Abhishek Nayar stated that leg-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has now got the clarity of how he plans to target every batter in preparation for his team's matches in IPL 2023. At MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, Chakaravarthy out-spun Chennai Super Kings' spinners to pick 2/36 in his four overs. Co-incidentally, the leg-spinner was a net bowler for Chennai in 2018, before now becoming a mainstay with Kolkata and looking at peak of his powers, especially after taking just six wickets in IPL 2022. "After last season, we discussed quite a bit on what we thought went wrong and also I think when you play season after season, teams tend to target you differently. One of things we tried to do throughout the off-season and throughout the season was to understand the challenges we were going to face. There is a stark difference in terms of how he's using his deliveries - using the one that goes away (leg-break) a lot more than he was doing last year," said Nayar in the post-match press conference. Nayar further elaborated on how Chakaravarthy put in the hard yards to be a lethal spinner for Kolkata in IPL 2023, where he's picked 19 wickets in 13 matches at an economy rate of 8.03. "So, a lot of work went in not just technically and tactically but also understanding his mindset in terms of understanding how individuals are going to target him. I think last year when he didn't have a great season, the ways in which every team was t...

Meet Varun Chakaravarthy

What's common between Anil Kumble, S Venkataraghavan, Erapalli Prasanna, Krishnamachari Srikanth, Javagal Srinath, R Ashwin? Stellar cricketers, yes. But did you know, all of them held a degree in Engineering before making a name in cricket? Well, let's introduce you to one such character in our 2020 squad - Varun Chakaravarthy, B.Arch, SRM Institute of Science and Technology. The humble, soft-spoken lad from Chennai grabbed the spotlight after becoming one of the hottest picks of the 2019 IPL Auction, where Kings XI Punjab bagged him for a whopping contract. A year later, the KKR think-tank ensured we had him in our ranks for his unique, mysterious style of bowling. The Tamil Nadu leg-spinner, who has several variations in his kitty, was afterall a part of our 2018 camp as a net-bowler, where he mesmerised the management with his unusual skills. "I studied in SRM College, Kattankulathur. I did architecture - it's a five-year professional course," Varun recounted in a recent chat with kkr.in. "It was a completely different world. It's all about computers, T-scales, Drawing, Chart Papers and all those things." Varun was so much into it, that he didn't even watch or play any cricket during this phase. "I never used to even see matches, (but) I always had that love (for cricket)," he said. "Somewhere in my concept of any design in a building, I used to bring cricket in it. Architecture is all about Lines and Angles. Even bowling is all about Lines, Lengths, Angles of what you...
