Vasant Shankar Davkhare (67), the senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Deputy Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC), has passed away in Mumbai on January 4, 2018. He was known for his loyalty to NCP chief Sharad Pawar and was also known for having cordial relations across party lines; especially with Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray. Mumbai: Former deputy chairman of the State Council and leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Vasant Davkhare, passed away on Thursday night at Bombay Hospital. He was 68. Known for his loyalty to NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Davkhare was one of his trusted aides. Davkhare was also known for having cordial relations across party lines, especially with Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray. His closeness to Thackerays always ensured his easy win in Council polls. However, he tasted defeat last year as the Sena decided to contest against him. His son Niranjan is also an MLC from the NCP. Mr. Davkhare was suffering from a renal failure and had been on ventilator support since November 23 at Bombay Hospital. While his treating nephrologist Dr. Vishwanath Billa refused to comment on his ailment, hospital sources said that his condition remained critical due to a predominant infection. “Along with the chronic kidney disease, he had developed pneumonia,” said a doctor, adding that he succumbed to a multiple organ failure. After allegations that the state government had not appointed an agency to issue such high security number plates as directed by the Centre,NCP MLC Vinayak Mete said the private company,Utsav,had issued such duplicate number plates and committed fraud to the tune of Rs 150 crore. However,minister of state for transport GulabraoDeokar said no such company had been appointed and no fraud had taken place. “The question of duplicate number plates does not occur,” said Deokar. He added that tenders were now being issued and no corruption or fraud as alleged by members had taken place.

Deputy chairman of Maharashtra legislative council Vasant Davkhare has courted controversy by allegedly trying to influence a government agency to expedite payment to a firm that had violated tender conditions and whose bid to block retendering of the project work was shot down by the high court. He has, however, denied any wrongdoing. HT Image In March, Davkhare wrote to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) asking why a consortium, BPL-BCC, that had completed 86% of the contracted work in the Mithi river widening project, had not been paid even after two years. Davkhare asked Ashwini Bhide, MMRDA joint commissioner, to stop new tenders to be floated for completing the unfinished work of rock blasting in the Mithi river, and resolve the issue at the earliest through a tribunal. An RTI query filed by Anil Galgali of a non-government organisation, Athak Seva Sangh, has revealed that the work, contracted in April 2007, was not completed within a stipulated span of 15 months. Bhide wrote back to Davkhare on May 5, stating, “The contractor completed only 10% of the work in the stipulated period. MMRDA gave extension to contractor till June 2009, but the firm could finish merely another 10% of the work. Despite this, we were willing to give additional extension, but the contractor did not comply with tender conditions.” Bhide added that eventually the contract was cancelled and new tenders were floated.
