भद्र देश में अश्वपति नाम का एक राजा रहता था। उनकी कोई संतान नहीं थी। संतान पाने के लिए राजा प्रतिदिन मंत्रों के उच्चारण के साथ एक लाख आहुतियां देता था। ये सिलिसिला अठारह वर्षों तक जारी रहा। एक दिन उनके इस यज्ञ और तप से प्रसन्न होकर सावित्री देवी प्रकट हुईं और उन्हें संतान के रूप में एक रूपवान, गुणवान और तेजस्वी कन्या होने का वरदान दिया। सावित्री देवी के वरदान से राजा को पुत्री हुई, जिस वजह से उन्होंने अपनी बेटी का नाम भी सावित्री रखा। अपने पिता की बात सुनकर सावित्री ने खुद ही अपने लिए वर ढूंढना शुरू कर दिया। एक दिन सावित्री तपोवन में जा पहुंची। वहां उसने सत्यवान नाम के सुंदर युवक को देखा। सत्यवान एक राजकुमार था, जो साल्व देश के राजा द्युमत्सेन का एकलौता पुत्र था। जब सावित्री ने उसके जंगल में रहने की वजह पूछी, तो सत्यावान के पिता राजा द्युमत्सेन ने बताया कि वे अंधे हो गए हैं और इसी वजह से उनसे उनका राज्य छीन लिया गया है। अब वह अपने परिवार के साथ इसी जंगल में रहते हैं। सावित्री ने राजकुमार सत्यवान और उसके पिता राजा द्युमत्सेन के बारे में अपने पिता को बताया और इच्छा जाहिर की कि वो राजकुमार सत्यवान से शादी करना चाहती है। राजा अश्वपति बेटी को दिए वचन को पूरा करने के लिए तपोवन जंगल गए। वहां पहुंचकर राजा ने द्युमत्सेन से मुलाकात की और उन्हें उनके पुत्र सत्यवान के लिए अपनी बेटी सावित्री से विवाह का प्रस्ताव दिया। राजा अश्वपति की बात सुनकर, राजा द्युमत्सेन ने बड़े ही निराश मन से कहा – “हे राजन, मुझे आपका प्रस्ताव मंजूर है। मेरा पुत्र सत्यवान गुणवान, धर्मात्मा और बलवान है, लेकिन ऋषिराज नारद ने मुझे बताया है कि यह अल्पआयु का है, जिसकी अगले वर्ष अमावस्या के दिन मृत्यु हो जाएगी। इसलिए,...
