This branch of Vijay Sales is among the biggest in the city, alongside Paud Rd. It is spread across 3 floors. Therere a lot of varieties of electronic products with a focus on home appliances, alongside cooktops too.The staff is generally courteous, but refuse to give a considerable discount very easily. With a belief i went to vijay sales and bought AC. For which they charged me a lot.Core cutting charges are usually Rs 60 pr inch but they charged Rs 120 per inch.Installation done with extra Copper pipe n socket extra charges.If i have bought AC online, then i might have got the lower price with all these services at lower prices I recently visited here to buy a laptop for myself. They all but wrote him off when big corporate competition came in… but Nanu Gupta marched on, taking one step at a time, backing his instinct about what works in the Indian market. Today, at 75, he is at the helm of a large business empire, Vijay Sales, his electronics retail chain that has 76 stores across India. The turnover for his partnership firm was Rs 3,250 crore last financial year and is close to touching Rs 3,700 crore in 2017-18. In 1967, he started out on his entrepreneurial journey with just Rs 2,500. Born to a farmer family in 1936 in Haryana, Nanu left his village Kaithal in search for work at the age of 18. “I came to Mumbai in 1954 and stayed at my cousin’s house in Valkeshwar,” recounts Nanu. “He was a distributor for Usha sewing machines and fans, and I worked as a salesman with him for a few years.” A decade later, Nanu started his own shop with his brother Vijay (who passed away in 1980), retailing sewing machines and fans in Matunga. They called it Vijay Sales as Nanu was very fond of his brother. The shop was very small, only 50-60 sq ft at a rent of Rs 30 per month, but his dreams were big. “I had only Rs 2,500 when I started the first shop in Matunga but I had full faith in myself and God. Having worked with an Usha International distributor, he knew the differences of the consumer durables Capitals were limited, and so was the area of the place. Gupta borrowed Rs 2,000 from family and friends to set up his first shop in Mahim in 1967. To make room for consumers, he had to keep a folding chair in the 40 sq ft store named Vijay Sales after his junior sibling. Direct purchases supported him to save on dealer commissions and pass on the advantage to customers in the form of rates lower than the rival brands.
