Vikram movie review: Lokesh Kanagaraj’s enormous fanboy service to Kamal Haasan is extremely satisfying

Premium Vikram movie review: Lokesh Kanagaraj’s enormous fanboy service to Kamal Haasan is extremely satisfying Vikram movie review: Kamal Haasan reprises his role as a spy named Vikram from the first movie that came out in 1986. The film, however, is set in a background that has connections with the events that took place in Lokesh's career-making movie Kaithi (2019). Tamil superstar Kamal and Lokesh kept telling us that there was no connection between Vikram that came out in 1986, and the new iteration. But that is only a half-truth. Lokesh, like his other films, lifts material from the cinematic well of Kamal, and reinvents it to suit the taste of the current crop of the movie-going audience. The spark for the latest Vikram came from Kamal himself. When Lokesh approached the actor to pitch a movie to him, the latter spoke of a plot idea that he had originally thought of for the 1986 movie. But, at that time, director Rajasekhar had felt the story idea was way ahead of its time and zeroed in on a different premise about an off-duty spy, who ends up preventing an airborne attack. That Vikram was Kamal’s attempt to make a Bond-like movie in Tamil, while this Vikram is very rooted in terms of culture and in the context of social and relationships, far removed from the world of Bond. Also Read | Left to Kamal, he couldn’t have made the latest Vikram this good. He could perhaps have made a movie better than this version about a rogue agent going on a killing spree on a person...

Kamal Haasan’s Vikram ending explained

Vikram works just fine as a standalone movie. It has some of the most expensive talents in southern cinema: Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, Fahad Faasil and Suriya. It has a non-stop flow of action, and a lot of meta-reference to enthrall Kamal fans. And these are all part of a cinematic universe that director Lokesh Kangaraj seems to be stringing together as he goes along. If you have already seen the film, the last scene could have been a little confusing, if you had not seen Lokesh’s first big hit Kaithi. In the climax, Lokesh lays down all the cards on the table, making his intentions of continuing this world of crime that he started in 2019. Also Read | Lokesh Kangaraj had first imagined a small-budget action drama after he was struck by an idea from a newspaper article. He wrote Kaithi keeping Mansoor Ali Khan in mind. Mansoor is a popular character actor, who is known for his villain roles. He has carved a niche for himself in Tamil cinema by playing negative roles with an innate naughtiness that’s worthy of imitation. However, the script finally landed in the hands of Karthi. And with him on board, the budget, scale, scope and reach of the movie also went up, taking Lokesh’s career to another level. Lokesh took the inspiration from Kamal’s cult classic Virumaandi (2004) to create the story of a man who had served time in jail for a crime and just got out, only to save the entire police force, which has come under a ruthless attack plotted by the drug mafia. ‘Vikram’ movie review: Kamal Haasan steps back to watch Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi have fun in Lokesh Cinematic Universe The new ‘Vikram’ disappoints the fans of the 1986 original and could have been a standalone film with Fahadh Faasil carrying on the legacy of the agent like in the James Bond films June 03, 2022 12:14 pm | Updated 12:28 pm IST A new era has dawned in Tamil cinema. Lokesh Kanagaraj, the four-film-old filmmaker, has opened the gates to a new Cinematic Universe that hints at wondrous possibilities with Vikram as the first big step. There has never been a filmmaker before Lokesh to steer the conversation around delivering a true cinematic experience in the right direction. Before Lokesh, cinematic experience meant grand ideas and needless adornments to massage a star’s male crowd. But this filmmaker is committed to giving you an experience of a certain standard. There’s a certain taste, visual flavour and a certain style to the way he writes and directs. He accomplished this cinema experience with ease in the terrific Kaithi, a Speed on drugs. He gave us a tease of this new Cinematic Universe in Master. About the Vijay-starrer, I had written in Master is what Lokesh could do to a Vijay film, one smiles at the thought of what one could expect from him for his vaathi, in Vikram.” This mouthwatering possibility, unfortunately, still remains a theory. For, what felt organic and thrilling in Kaithi, feels weak and forced in Vikram. Martin Scorsese’s Goodf...
