Vitamin B12 is a medication that prevents and treats low vitamin B12 levels in your body. Vitamin B12 maintains the health of your nervous system and red blood cells. This medication helps people who don’t get enough vitamin B12 in their diet or their body doesn’t absorb enough of the vitamin regularly. What is this medication? VITAMIN B12 (VAHY tuh min B12) prevents and treats low vitamin B12 levels in your body. It is used in people who do not get enough vitamin B12 from their diet or when their digestive tract does not absorb enough. Vitamin B12 plays an important role in maintaining the health of your nervous system and red blood cells. This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions. What should I tell my care team before I take this medication? They need to know if you have any of these conditions: • Anemia • Kidney disease • Leber's disease • Malabsorption disorder • An unusual or allergic reaction to cyanocobalamin, cobalt, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant • Breast-feeding How should I use this medication? Take this medication by mouth with a glass of water. Follow the directions on the package or prescription label. If you are taking the tablets, do not chew, cut, or crush this medication. If using a vitamin solution, use a specially marked spoon or dropper to measure each dose. Ask your pharmacist if you do not have one. Household spoons are not ac...
