Suzuki has sold in excess of 550 500 units of the Vitara Brezza since it was launched on the sub-continent in 2016. Not only is the model the top-selling SUV in India (with 38.8% of the entry-SUV market and 18.4% of all SUV sales) – it was named the Indian Car of the Year in 2017. The model arrives in Mzansi in updated-for-2020 spec, which comprises an engine upgrade, as well as tweaked styling. 2020 Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza petrol review, test drive

What is it? In an ideal world, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza should have waltzed into the BS6 emissions era with a new 1.5-litre diesel engine in place of the older BS4 Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre diesel. However, things didn’t go to plan. Maruti Suzuki’s new in-house 1.5 diesel does not meet the latest emission standards and this forced the carmaker to take the tough decision to withdraw the engine after its very short stint under the hood of the Ciaz and Ertiga. As a consequence, come April 1, 2020, Enter the Vitara Brezza petrol. It shares its BS6-compliant K15 1.5-litre engine with the Ciaz and Ertiga, and has the job of maintaining the Brezza’s position at the top of the compact SUV sales chart. Maruti, for its part, is confident the Brezza petrol will replace diesel volumes 1:1. Question is, does the new Brezza petrol have the same mass appeal as the original Brezza diesel? What’s it like to drive? The Maruti Vitara Brezza’s 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine makes 105hp at 6,000rpm and 138Nm at 4,400rpm which aren’t shining figures for the compact SUV segment. However, in everyday driving you won’t have reason to complain. The engine is smooth and quiet, there’s enough pep at low speeds, and, though unexciting, there's a pleasant build of speed. Overtaking traffic won’t pose much of a problem either, but what’s missing is that mid-range kick that you’d get on a turbocharged engine, the old Brezza’s diesel included. That being said, the Vitara Brezza petrol is...

2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza to face strong compact SUV rivals

The 2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza, however, will have its work cut out. The compact SUV segment is now a lot more evolved, with almost every mass market carmaker having a share in the pie. More are, in fact, yet to join. Models such as the What the Vitara Brezza got right Seeing the success of the Ecosport, Maruti was, of course, quick to realise the potential of the segment and the body style. The Vitara Brezza was conceptualised, designed and styled in India, so it had all the right elements to make it a winning formula. Launched at a competitive starting price of Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the Vitara Brezza made for a very well-rounded package. It had class-leading space, a great driving position, and, having arrived three years after the Ecosport, it was also more contemporary. It also offered a feature that was a huge draw for buyers at that time – a touchscreen infotainment system, something the Ford missed out on. The Vitara Brezza was powered by a sole Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre diesel engine at launch, and only came with a manual gearbox. Despite the Ecosport's automatic gearbox and petrol engine option, the frugality of Vitara Brezza’s diesel engine struck the right chord with the Indian car buyer. With just a sole powertrain, the Vitara Brezza achieved its 1 lakh sales milestone in just 12 months, much quicker than the Ecosport. The fact that it was a Maruti also helped its case with unmatched accessibility and after sales services. Evolving to meet the need of the hou...
