How a strange rumor of Walt Disney’s death became legend

When you hear “Disney on Ice,” you may think of the wildly popular ice shows featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse and others skating in hockey arenas across the nation. But there’s also the disturbing urban legend that Walt Disney’s corpse was frozen in a cryonic chamber containing liquid nitrogen to be revived at a later date. This week 52 years ago, television and radio broadcasts shared the news that Walter Elias Disney had died. The cartoon mogul who created Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck had produced some of Hollywood’s greatest hits, dreamed up Disneyland and Disney World, and was one of world’s most beloved storytellers. He was 65. It is hard to pin down exactly when the rumors began. In early 1967, a few weeks after Disney’s death on Dec. 15, 1966, a reporter for a tabloid newspaper called The National Spotlite claimed he had snuck into St. Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank, directly across the street from the Disney studios and where he was treated during his final illness. As the story went, the reporter disguised himself as an orderly, broke into a storage room, and saw the deceased Disney suspended in a cryogenic metal cylinder! Some went as far as to claim that his burial spot was a freezer stored underneath the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride at Disneyland. In 1969, the French magazine Ici Paris and, later still, The National Tattler in the U.S. advanced the rumors by predicting Disney would be thawed out in 1975. Some went as far as to claim that his burial spot was a...

Dead Bodies

Walt Disney Walt Disney was fascinated with technology. It's no wonder the creator of Mickey Mouse had his body frozen. Immediately after his death on December 17, 1965, Jeremy Bentham Jeremy was the father of utilitarianism as well as one of the founders of the University of London in England. He's the most eccentric of them all. When Jeremy died, he left everything to the University on one condition - he had to be publicly dissected in front of his friends, then stuffed, put in his finest clothes and mounted in a chair. Oh, and his walking stick, "Dapple" had to be in his hand. There was one other demand - Jeremy must attend the annual meetings of the University's Board of Governors. Since his death in 1832, Jeremy has attended every meeting. I guess it's true. I mean they do have pictures. First he pinched his skin like when you pop a zit. First, a couple eggs came out and then he went to the doctor and cut his skin open and a lot of spider egg sacks came out! AHHHH!

Is Walt Disney’s frozen body buried under Disneyland?

Dear Cecil: During a recent chat about freezing the body after death — cryogenics, I believe it’s called — somebody said Walt Disney’s body was frozen until they develop a cure for lung cancer. Disney supposedly is still technically alive, though terminally ill. I said freezing somebody alive is probably illegal, and if they waited for Uncle Walt to actually die, it would take too long to get him from hospital bed to Kelvinator — if you’re dead more than five seconds they can’t bring you back, right? Finally, how can cryogenics work at all? Ted L., Los Angeles Illustration by Slug Signorino Cecil replies: Your skepticism gladdens my heart, Ted; obviously my years of patient effort are starting to pay off. First things first: (1) Walt Disney, as near as can be determined, was cremated on December 17, 1966, two days after his death. Admirable work in this regard was done by William Poundstone, author of a ground-breaking volume called Big Secrets. Poundstone heard not only that Walt was on ice, but that the body was stashed below the Pirates of the Caribbean exhibition at Disneyland. Disney was known to have been preoccupied with death, his funeral services were held in secret, and the cause of his demise was never formally announced. Poundstone, however, was able to get a copy of the death certificate, which says Walt died of cancer of the left lung and was cremated at Forest Lawn cemetery. The certificate was signed by an embalmer named Dean Fluss, a real guy who really wo...
