WandaVision: Full Series Review

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always been bold. Despite its frequent reliance on formula, its very existence - a series of storylines told across more than a decade’s worth of multiple interconnected movies - is unlike anything else. It should come as no surprise, then, that WandaVision is also bold and experimental. And yet surprise it does: the MCU’s first true venture into television constantly morphs between surreal sitcom, puzzle box mystery, and superhero dramatics, indicating that Marvel’s confidence in a post-Endgame world remains strong. Free to write its own rules, WandaVision goes to places few would have expected the world’s biggest popcorn franchise to explore, and more often than not its themes of the grief and love between Wanda Maximoff and Vision help it find its footing. This is evident from the very first shot of the series. Filmed in monochrome and 4:3 ratio, the opening chapter of WandaVision looks like a recovered relic from the 1950s instead of glossy superhero cinema. Rather than deal with explosive conflict, WandaVision places its titular duo - Elizabeth Olsen’s magic-wielding Wanda and Paul Bettany’s sentient android Vision - into loving homages of classic US sitcoms such as I Love Lucy and Bewitched. With each successive episode the time period advances, recreating the aesthetic and directorial style of shows like The Brady Bunch and Family Ties. From multi-camera, live-audience set-ups to the energetic mockumentray formats of modern favourit...

WandaVision episode 9 recap: a muddled but emotionally satisfying final act

Agatha is holding Tommy and Billy with her magic string. They tell her to let them go. Wanda reminds Agatha that her powers work in the open, away from the runes. “I’m counting on it,” replies Agatha. Agatha pulls the boys to the ground, so Wanda hits her with an energy blast. Wanda tells the boys to go to their room, as Agatha gets to her feet. Wanda blasts her again, but this time Agatha holds Wanda’s red magical energy in her hand: “I take power from the undeserving. It’s kind of my thing.” Wanda’s hand is strangely blackened. Hayward’s new White Vision lands behind Wanda– confused, she asks if it’s really him. He touches her tenderly on the face, but it soon turns into something more sinister as he picks her up by the head. “And I was told you were powerful,” he tells her as she screams in agony. Wanda’s Vision swoops in, dragging White Vision along the ground at high speed before throwing him into an RV, which explodes. Vision asks where the boys are. Wanda says they’re safe inside the house, and that she should have explained everything to him when she realized what she’d done. She says she can fix the world she’s created. “Can you?” he asks. Agatha materializes over the house. “This is awkward,” she gloats. “Your ex and your boyfriend together at the same party. Who are you gonna choose, Wanda?” Wanda’s Vision flies up to take on White Vision while Wanda takes off to battle Agatha. In an upstairs bedroom of Agnes’s house, Monica Rambeau looks on and shouts Wanda’s n...

So some of us might want to watch WandaVision, but still be wondering, uh, who were these guys again? It's confusing for anyone to dive into a full-on bizarro superhero/sitcom hybrid world, but probably especially so if you don't remember these characters, or why they're walking through walls or making things fly with their brain. Prior to WandaVision, while both characters had their moments, they did tend to get a little bit lost in the scuffle of everything else happening around them. So it's hard to blame anyone for needing a refresher. So we went back to the archive to wrap everything...

WandaVision: A Complete Beginner’s Guide to the New Marvel Show

On Friday, Kevin Feige’s wildly successful superhero-film franchise—known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU—will spread its wings on a new platform: Disney+. That’s right: Years after a multitude of Marvel-branded TV shows aired on both Netflix and ABC, Feige’s official take on the MCU is coming to television. Due to COVID-related complications, this new phase will not be kicked off by the punch-heavy, militaristic Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Instead the MCU on TV is launching with the decidedly oddball WandaVision, which will send MCU sweethearts Scarlet Witch, a.k.a. Wanda Maximoff ( Elizabeth Olsen), and Vision ( Paul Bettany) zooming through decades of American sitcom history. Despite its mysterious, reality-bending premise, WandaVision could prove the perfect entrée into superhero storytelling—even for audiences who have never watched a single Marvel movie. All it takes to prepare is a Disney+ subscription and a very small amount of homework, which I’ve assembled for you below. Just as Mandalorian-inspired Baby Yoda memes sucked in audiences who never considered themselves Star Wars fans, advance images of Bettany and Olsen smooching their way through TV history have piqued the interest of non-Marvel fans. Last week Marvel and Disney+ launched a new series called Marvel Studios: Legends , which currently consists of two mini, 7-ish-minute-long episodes covering the film arcs of both Wanda and Vision. They act, essentially, as a “previously on” for newcomers,...
