Asia Cup 2022: Waqar Younis clarifies his controversial 'Big relief for India' statement on Shaheen Afridi’s injury

Pakistan pace sensation Shaheen Shah Afridi was ruled out of the 2022 Asia Cup last week after the pacer had suffered a right knee ligament injury while fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle last month. The news came as a big setback for the Babar Azam-led side as Shaheen played a big role in Pakistan’s massive win against India at the T20 World Cup 2021. The fast bowler had accounted for the wickets of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli as India lost by 10 wickets to Pakistan in the marquee tournament. It was also the first time India lost to Pakistan in a World Cup match. Meanwhile, reflecting on Shaheen’s injury, former Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis had tweeted that Shaheen’s absence will be a huge relief for India batters in Asia Cup. Pakistan could boycott Asia Cup 2023 as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan reject 'Hybrid Model': Report Pakistan refuse to play ODI series in Sri Lanka after SLC's proposal to host entire Asia Cup 2023: Report “Shaheen’s injury Big relief for the Indian top order batsmen. Sad we won’t be seeing him in #AsiaCup2022 Get fit soon Champ @iShaheenAfridi,” he posted. But his tweet did not go down well with the Indian fans who slammed the former Pakistan captain for making an immature comment, arguing that Indians have now chalked out a plan for Shaheen. Now, Waqar has cleared the air on his controversial statement and said that he was only praising Shaheen and didn’t mean to belittle India batters’ skills. “Shaheen ki...

Babar Azam will never sacrifice his spot for his team: Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis slam 'selfish' Pakistan captain

Pakistan's twin losses in the T20 World Cup so far has opened a can of worms as former cricketers have slammed the team management, weak middle-order, opening pair and captain Babar Azam's leadership. Legendary pace duo of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis recalled several incidents to label Babar insecure and selfish for opening the batting despite low returns. While middle-order's failure has been at the centre of Pakistan's recent losses, whether in the Asia Cup final or the England series, Babar's captaincy and form hasn't helped his side's cause. Babar went through a lean patch in the continental tournament but scoring a century and a couple of more big scores against England suggested that he was still Pakistan's best bet at the top. However, with scores of 15, 0 and 4 (last two being in the T20 World Cup against India and Zimbabwe), his batting position has come under the scanner as he and Mohammad Rizwan have been criticised many times for being conservative. Speaking on A Sports' show 'The Pavilion', Waqar said, "The easiest place to bat in T20s is opening. You have not let anyone else open in the last two years. I have discussed this with Misbah before, that why don’t you try something new? You have tried it out with bowling, but with batting, we have tried all the experiments with the middle order. But the openers have remained the same and they have batted 14-15 overs together. "Sometimes, as a captain and as a leader, you leave your spot and say, Haider, if it is n...

Waqar Younis

Waqar Younis, who emerged from Vehari, a remote corner of Multan in the Punjab province, had a dream start to an illustrious career, which made him one of the finest exponents of pace bowling. With fast-bowling partner Wasim Akram, he formed a lethal combination that was as intimidating with the old ball as with the new. Their ability to swing the ball at good pace made them as threatening a proposition as Michael Holding and Malcolm Marshall in tandem for the West Indies. A right-arm fast bowler of genuine pace, Waqar, having made his first-class debut in 1987-88, was spotted by Imran Khan who watched him bowl for his bank’s team in a televised match against a Delhi XI in a Super Wills Cup match in Pakistan. His run-up, action and follow-through impressed Imran so much that he immediately launched him into international cricket. Waqar’s ODI debut came against the touring West Indians in 1989 in Faisalabad, while he played his maiden Test against India in Karachi only a month later, taking four for 80. It was only the beginning of a promising career as he developed into one of the most fearsome fast bowlers of his time. Waqar’s ability to bowl at a fearsome pace coupled with swing and reverse-swing made him almost unplayable at times. He also bowled lethal toe-crushing yorkers that caused career-threatening injuries to nearly a dozen county cricketers as he flexed his ware for Surrey and later for Glamorgan to win the Welsh team the county championship in 1997. The “Burewa...
