Tuesday, June 13: If there's any state that is waiting the hardest for the long overdue embrace of this year's southwest monsoon season, it's West Bengal. For the past few weeks, the eastern states have reeled under blistering heatwave conditions, and rainy respite could not come any sooner. Luckily, parts of Kolkata received some evening showers on Monday, although they were strictly non-monsoonal and cast by a cyclonic circulation over Bihar. But with monsoon having reached the northern parts of West Bengal on Monday, it is now only a matter of time before it moves into Kolkata and the rest of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that the eastern arm of the Northern Limit of the Monsoon (NLM) — an imaginary line that tracks the progress of our SW monsoon — has finally swept Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and parts of northeastern Bihar under its rainy rug. From here, the NLM typically takes about 3-5 days on its arduous journey from North to South Bengal. If this rate of progression holds true this year as well, then the entirety of West Bengal may get covered by monsoon by the end of this week. Historical records suggest the monsoon covers the entirety of West Bengal by June 15.
