GM, Samsung SDI choose Indiana for $3B EV battery plant

NEW CARLISLE, Ind. (WISH) — St. Joseph County will soon be home to the largest electrical vehicle investment in Indiana history. General Motors and South Korea-based Samsung SDI plan to bring a more than $3 billion EV battery cell plant to New Carlisle and create 1,700 manufacturing jobs by 2026, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced Tuesday. The plant, a joint venture between GM and Samsung SDI, will be built just east of New Carlisle at Larrison Boulevard and State Road 2. The New Carlisle facility will house production lines for battery cells that GM expects will “significantly increase the accessibility and affordability” of electric vehicles in the U.S., the Indiana Economic Development Corporation says. Construction on the battery cell plant will begin within the next year and at least 1,000 workers will be needed to complete the build, according to the IEDC. “This project represents the largest single investment and job commitment in St. Joseph County in the last 75 years and will impact our region for decades,” Carl Baxmeyer, President of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners, said. “We look forward to a long partnership with GM and Samsung SDI as they move forward on their first battery plant as partners.” The New Carlisle plant is part of The Indiana Economic Development Corporation says it’s working with GM and Samsung SDI to finalize performance-based tax incentives to support the joint venture’s investment and job creation plans. Weather forecast for Indianapolis; rain possible ahead of Juneteenth

Dwight Adams/IndyStar, Wochit Rainy wetter weather is well on the way — trying saying that 5x fast — for parched areas of Central Indiana leading up to next week's Juneteenth festivities. Local forecasters say it's a welcome change from the dry conditions Hoosiers have seen so far this year. "The rain is definitely needed," said Brad Herold with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. "What rain we have had so far has really made little difference as far as the deficits we're seeing across the state." Heading toward a drought? On Sunday, much of Central Indiana received at least a quarter of an inch of rain, with Indianapolis getting 0.64 inches of precipitation. The rain helped, but Indianapolis is still 1.32 inches below normal rainfall this month and nearly 2 inches below normal for the year. "Within a two or three day timespan, we have a couple of rainfall events so that's a refreshing change," Herold said. "There's about an 80-90% chance for rain Tuesday from Indianapolis northward, and a lower 20% chance for rain in the southwest counties." Water: Herold said rain chances would improve again beginning Thursday leading into the Juneteenth weekend. Here's what Hoosiers can expect next week as more precipitation moves into the area, according to NWS. If you enjoyed yesterday's rain then you're in luck! Scattered rain showers and possibly a thunderstorm return tomorrow along with windy conditions. As of right now, the best chance of rain appears to be from roughly ...

FOX59/CBS4 has received many calls about a string of bright, starry lights in the Central Indiana sky tonight. Last week, Brian predicted that a Starlink satellite internet constellation, operated by American aerospace company SpaceX, would pass through the sky around 10:35 p.m. Monday. Sure enough, many of our viewers have spotted the long, bright, linked satellite. One viewer, Ashley Morgan, provided this photo of the satellite in the night sky:

Indiana winter storm: snow chances rising this week

INDIANAPOLIS — We are starting off this morning with temperatures in the 30s and a few flurries around. All eyes are on the winter storm heading our way midweek — let’s get into it. Cold, quiet Monday and Tuesday Both Monday and Tuesday will be cold with cloudy skies. Temperatures will climb into the lower 30s each day. Overnight lows in the 20s. Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday snow will move in setting the stage for heavy snow on Wednesday. How much snow will Indiana see? As of right now, and again, this could change over the next 24 hours, Indianapolis could see anywhere between 5″-9″ where that bullseye is set up. Areas around the bullseye will see 3″-6″. Don’t focus so much on the totals, focus on the impacts and timing. Heavy snow, low visibility, and during Wednesday morning and evening commutes will create hazardous travel.
