A severe cyclone is set to hit Pakistan and the west coast of India, home to major ports and oil refineries, on Thursday, India’s weather agency said. The nation has raised an alert for the “extremely severe cyclonic storm,” dubbed Biparjoy, which could see winds surge to 150 kilometers (93 miles) an hour, the India Meteorological Department said in a statement.

Traffic was disrupted, while several trees were uprooted after heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed Gujarat's Porbandar on Wednesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for several states and UTs, including in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Lakshadweep, etc. In Gujarat, fishing activities have been suspended till June 16, ports are shut and ships are anchored as the sea turned very rough and weather became inclement with extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds in the region due to the approaching cyclone. Navy teams are on standby for relief operations as cyclone Biparjoy approaches the Gujarat coast. Four Navy ships with HADR bricks embarked are on standby at short notice. Meanwhile, five relief teams each at Porbandar and Okha and 15 relief teams at Valsura are on standby for rendering assistance to civil authorities. Helos at INS Hansa in Goa and INS Shikra in Mumbai are ready for embarkation/ ferry to Gujarat, the Navy said in a statement. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday reviewed the preparedness measures being taken in Kutch for cyclone Biparjoy. He visited the Bhuj Air Force station to take stock of the preparations made by 'Garuda' Emergency Response Team of the Indian Air Force.
