Maharashtra: 'Extremely' severe Cyclone Biparjoy brings high tidal waves in Mumbai

Image Source : ANI Maharashtra Cyclone Biparjoy: Cyclone Biparjoy has intensified into an 'extremely severe cyclonic storm' and is likely to make landfall in Gujarat's Kutch and Pakistan's Karachi. Ahead of the approaching cyclone, Mumbai on Monday witnessed high tidal waves along its coastal areas. A video of the high tidal waves hitting the shores of Mumbai is going viral on social media. Earlier, high tidal waves were seen at Tithal Beach in Gujarat. Several parts of Mumbai and Maharashtra received rains on Sunday night, an IMD official said. Mumbai city as well as coastal parts of the state also witnessed strong winds as the intensity of cyclone Biparjoy increased bringing rains to the western parts of the state. Strong winds also affected the air quality and visibility due to dust particles. Some trees fell in parts of Mumbai due to gusty winds, said a civic official. Huge waves caught tourists in Ganpatipule town in the coastal Ratnagiri district by surprise. The waves hit the beach with a strong current, scaring away the tourists. There was no serious injury reported in the incident. (with inputs from PTI)

"Set up in 2017, this is a fairly new observatory and we need at least one decade of data to ascertain the departure for the location. All our other observatories were showing normal departures, hence not qualifying for a heatwave condition," said Sushma Nair, scientist, IMD Mumbai. Abhijit Modak, an amateur forecaster who runs Konkan Weather blog, said: "Colaba and Santacruz weather stations are located closer to the sea and do not depict the correct picture of the higher temperatures observed in the interiors during peak summers. Also, the day temperatures recorded are in the air, while the spectators at the event were closer to the ground where the heat may have been higher," he said. Heat index, which is a combination of various factors such as land temperature, humidity, wind circulation and green cover, has to be locally measured, said professor Mahaveer Golechha of Indian Institute of Public Health, Gujarat.
