‘Wednesday’ Officially Renewed for Season 2 by Netflix – The Hollywood Reporter

Logo text Well it’s about time: After speculation about the hit show’s fate, the streamer has confirmed the goth mystery series will return for another round. “It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world,” said showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar in a statement. “Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into season two. We can’t wait to dive head first into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of Nevermore. Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.” Since its release on Nov. 23, the debut season starring Jenna Ortega has become Netflix’s third-most-popular series of all time, behind only Stranger Things season four and Squid Game. The show also twice broke the record for most hours viewed in a single week by an English-language TV series. Yet the protracted renewal process caused some anxiety among fans, and there were unfounded rumors the show might move to Prime Video (since Amazon acquired the show’s producer MGM and its content last year for $8.5 billion). Amazon had originally passed on Wednesday as an original series. Producers are also exploring ideas for a spinoff. Previously, Gough teased season two THR: “We wanna sort of explore and sort of complicate all of those relationships going forward. The school was closed when they left, which gave us the most possibilities for season two, and I think that’s something that we’re excited to explore. For us, the show also is really ...

The Cast of 'Wednesday': Everything to Know

The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, brought his signature eerie vision to the characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams. The series follows the Addams Family's daughter, Wednesday, as she enrolls in Nevermore Academy, a prestigious school for "outcasts, freaks and monsters," as the fictitious academy's "I had done so much TV in my life. All I've ever wanted to do is film…You have to prove yourself. It's only in the last three or four years that I've been able to start going up for film," she explained. "I was scared that by signing on to another television show it could prevent me from doing other jobs I really wanted and cared about." Even before the release of Wednesday, Ortega was already establishing herself as a scream queen. She played Tara Carpenter in the fifth installment of the Scream franchise, a role she revived in Scream 6. Making of Wednesday: How the Series Brought Tim Burton to TV – The Hollywood Reporter

Burton is known for crafting outsiders, from Beetlejuice‘s Lydia Deetz to Edward Scissorhands. So Wednesday felt like a natural fit. “It really resonated with his high school experience,” notes Gough, who along with Millar secured Burton for his first episodic project — the eight-installment first season from MGM Television debuted Nov. 23 on Netflix — with the filmmaker serving as director of the first four episodes and series executive producer. Wednesday Addams is, of course, the death-obsessed daughter in the The Addams Family, which was created by cartoonist Charles Addams and first published by The New Yorker in the 1930s. Adaptations of the story of this macabre family include the classic sitcom that ran for two seasons during the ’60s as well as live-action and animated movies. Luis Guzmán as Gomez and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Wednesday’s parents, who send her off to their alma mater for boarding school. Courtesy of Netflix Gough and Millar are perhaps best known for the TV series Smallville, which ran for 10 seasons from 2001 to 2011, and which told the story of a young Clark Kent before he became known as Superman. The series was something of a touchstone as they conceived Wednesday, which the duo did after completing their shows The Shannara Chronicles and Into the Badlands, turning their focus toward exploring a new side of a well-known character. As fans of the original Addams Family show (thanks to reruns) and the ’90s movies, they were intrigued by ...

It’s the kind of series that makes sense in the fall when things get colder and greyer. Wednesday is very much a Halloween-adjacent show, so it makes sense that Season 1 came out in November and it makes just as much sense that Season 2 will be release around the same time of year. Editor Ortega is a rising star and a busy one, but what we know of her upcoming slate of projects is hopeful. The biggest— Scream 6—is complete and set to release on March 10th, 2023. Two other projects— Winter Spring Summer or Fall and Finestkind—are both in post-production. Only Miller’s Girl, where Ortega stars alongside Martin Freeman, remains in production. Director Tim Burton is working on the long-awaited sequel to Beetlejuice, but details around the project—including its release date—remain foggy.
