NEW DELHI: From December 1 this year, India will assume the G20 presidency for a year and chair over 200 meetings that aim to secure global economic growth and prosperity. Together, the G20 members represent more than 80% of the world's GDP, 75% of international trade and 60% of the world’s population. Supply chain disruptions, debt crisis are key global challenges: Jaishankar at G20 meet

By PTI VARANASI: The prospects of a global economic recovery remain dim amid supply chain disruptions, prolonged debt crisis and pressures on energy, food and fertiliser security, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday, calling for a united global approach to deal with the challenges. In an address at the G20 Development Ministers' conclave here, he also said that India has put forward an ambitious seven-year action plan for accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that presented an integrated and inclusive roadmap for G20 actions. The roadmap focuses on digital public infrastructure and fostering data for development, investing in women-led development and energy transition to protect the planet. "The world today faces unprecedented and multiple crises -- from the pandemics to the disruptions in supply chains, from the impact of conflict to climate events, our era is becoming more volatile and uncertain by the day," Jaishankar said. "Added to this is the stubborn inflation, rising interest rates and shrinking fiscal space for many nations. As always in such times, the weak and vulnerable bear the brunt," he said. The year 2023 is big for India when it comes to geopolitics. On 1 December last year, the country assumed the presidency of the G20 forum, taking over from Indonesia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called it a “huge opportunity for India”. As India helms the forum until 30 November, there are a host of meetings scheduled. Earlier, officials had said that around 215 meetings will be held in around 50 locations across various states. However, in May, the number of meetings was increased to 230 with 60 cities playing host. So far, India had held more than 100 meetings.
