What Is ISO Certification?

As a small business owner, if you plan to bid on projects, particularly tenders released by larger corporations and government bodies, there is a good chance you will come across a requirement for ISO certification. While there are many types of ISO certifications, they are all designed to ensure that the products, services and process a company uses conform to acceptable international standards. Tip ISO certification ensures that an organization runs its business using international standards for products, services and processes. These can include business management, environmental policies, or they can be standards that were developed by the ISO for specific business sectors. Most companies begin with ISO 9001 certification, which is the basis for most of the other ISO standards. The cost of being certified varies depending on the size of your company. The process can take up to a year or more. NPA targets ISO certification for Apapa, Tin Can ports

The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Bello-Koko, said the authority was working on securing the International Standard Organisation (ISO) Certification for Apapa and Tin Can Ports, just like it did for Onne and Calabar ports. Bello-Koko stated this in Lagos last week while commissioning the newly refurbished control tower in Apapa and Tin Can ports. He explained that the move to ensure all the ports across the country get the ISO certification is to show that they are operating based on international best practices and standards. Bello-Koko said this informed the agency’s decision to upgrade its control tower across the country, adding that both the Port of Calabar and Onne have been ISO certified. “ISO certificate takes many stages, if you recall, the ports of Calabar and Onne are already certified. The first thing you do is an assessment to find out where the gaps are, and you try to close those gaps, either in facilities or staff training. “The process is ongoing and we are making serious efforts to ensure all the ports in the country are ISO certified,” he said. He said the authority had a meeting with the consultant about two weeks ago, to identify the gaps, adding that the first phase of the job has been done, while the second one is ongoing.
