Tires

First time poster. I have a Grasshopper model 124...it's a little one. My lawn is about a 1/2 acre and is flat. I have had this mower for about 5 years and love it. The problem I have, and I assume this is true with all zero turn mowers, is that the tires spin in sharp turns or stopping and starting and it tears up my grass. I have tried to make wider turns, to be careful not to take off too fast or stop to quickly, but it doesn't seem to help much. Would putting on bar (tractor type) tires instead of turf tires help or would that just tear the grass up even more? I was very happy to find this forum. Love my grasshopper and really like how logical it is put together and the quality of workmanship. Thanks for all comments. Tom (In Ohio) I do that now vs just spinning around a tree or when turning around. This mower has so much torque in the drive wheels that it is very hard to go in any direction from a stop without spinning the wheels. I would think, unless the ground is very dry, I would leave tire marks with bar tires, but I am at a loss on how to stop tearing up the grass. Maybe I just really need to concentrate on a very soft touch on the levers. ...yeah..keeping the zero point of a zero turn "between" the 2 drive tires is the key. It may be easier on a front deck with the zero point being right below your butt . After a long straight I do a ~ 45* turn, stop, then a 90* zero spin, stop, then I make the ~ 45* turn unto the next straight. Find whatever works for y...

The GrassHopper Tires?

Googled & Googled but i can not find out if i can but the Spiky Hornet Tires on Grasshopper (or others, want somthing else than the original ones). Sand Scorcher an The GrassHopper seems to use the same ones. Tried Tamico but could only find those standard tires. Warning: bought those Bronze dampers on Ebay that seem to be the only oil dampers that will fit straight away. Non of the 4 i got can hold the oil but i kept them on for the looks, but i removed them today as the get completely stiff all the time, so the original bouncy ones are back on and are doing a better job. Do keep away from those on Ebay (i will put out a picture later) The Hornet/Frog spiked will fit the GH wheel and fit on the rear of the GH. The GH shares the same wheels and therefore tires as the Hornet and Frog. Also the SRB. The Brat and Rough Rider (?) wheels and tires are 1.7” and be be used. I use Brats on my own GH for street use. Alternative 1.5” tires for Tamiya wheels can be hard to find. CRP and Duratrax both made tires for those wheels as did a few smaller 3rd party manufacturers. These are rare and expensive. Troll also made tires and these are easier to find but still expensive. You might try searching for 1.4 or 1.6 tires. As a matter of fact, I’m watching a pair of Duratrax 1.4 “Matrix” tires on Ebay now. But they are waaaaay to expensive for my taste.., Good luck! Terry

Noot: Competition Tires: Goodyear Grasshoppers

In the days of scrambles racing - the Goodyear Grasshopper tread design was a proven winner. They came factory on the early XLCH models. Restoration guys are known to fight over these. Like any old part, once it's reproduced, the originals aren't worth quite as much, 'cause some guys don't really care. Plus, used tires are usually hard and weather checked. alternative wheels and tyres for Grasshopper 2

You might be thinking of the Mad Bull.. Tamiya slightly modified the GrassHopper 2 chassis and added monster truck wheels/tires to transform it into a Monster Buggy type car. I haven't experimented on changing out the stock wheels.. The GrassHopper 2 used the same wheel design as the Fox and the Wild One (possibly others). I'm not sure about the Mad Bull wheels since I have never built one. Are you thinking of this? I tried a poor man's version with a Grasshopper 2 and some Lunchbox wheels, but it quickly bent the steering links and caused damage to the shock towers as the design just isn't strong enough. The Mad Bull has a stronger chassis, a better shock tower design, and much stouter steering links. It looks like a Ghopper2 but really isn't under the skin. I don't recommend trying to convert a Ghopper2, it doesn't work that well. For the money, just buy a Mad Bull and it will work better. Mad Bull uses wheels and tires identical to the Lunchbox EXCEPT the rear wheels are 12mm hex instead of Frog/Lunchbox style. If you want to try big wheels directly onto your Ghopper2 you need Lunchbox rear wheels not Mad Bull. You also need to add longer uprights/axles as the stock ones are too short. Any standard size 2wd buggy front wheel will fit on the Ghopper2 - from Frog/Hornet up to the DT-02 line. Just bolt them on. Frog/Hornet/Ghopper2 rear wheels work on the back without modifications, or you can buy adapters and use any standard 12mm hex wheel. If you use the adapter below, ...
