What was the demand of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi that was refused by the British? from Social Science When People Rebel 1857 and After Class 8 CBSE

The reasons for the confidence of the British rulers abou their position in India before May 1857 are mentioned below: (i)Since the mid-18th century Nawabs and Rajas had gradually lost their authority and honour. Residents had been stationed in many courts, the freedom of the rulers reduced, their armed forces disbanded and their revenues and territories taken away by stages. (ii)The Company decided to end the Mughal dynasty. In 1849, Governor-General Dalhousie announced that after the death of Bahadur Shah Zafar the family of the king would be shifted out of the Red Fort. In 1856, Governor-General Canning decided that Bahadur Shah Zafar would be the last Mughal emperor and after his death his descendants would be recognised as princes.

Rani Lakshmi Bai was well known as the Rani of Jhansi. She led her troops into battle heroically. When she was driven out of Jhansi, she captured Gawalior with the help of Tantya Tope. She fought bravely with the British troops. However, she was killed in fighting at Kalpi (near Gwalior). She was an illustrious example of women power and courage. Her name is taken with utmost respect. Though not alive, she is in the heart of all Indians. The path she has shown to us is the path of selfless services and sacrifices.
