The 1860 Compromise That Would Have Preserved Slavery in the US Constitution

Following A series of concessions to the slaveholding southern states, from the “The word [Union] meant a nation united by compromise, preserved through the careful balancing of Southern interests and Northern ones, of slavery and freedom,” wrote Adam Goodheart in 1861: The Civil War Awakening. “Now, in the wake of Lincoln’s election, the nation’s only hope was to stitch together yet another new compromise, by which to continue sheltering both freedom and bondage beneath the same threadbare tent.” Between Lincoln’s election and the start of the John J. Crittenden, Moderate Democrat and Slaveholder, Authors the Plan The Crittenden Compromise was the creation of John J. Crittenden, a 74-year-old slaveholder and Democratic senator from Kentucky, who emerged with a compromise that he claimed would end the arguments over slavery and avert a Civil War between the North and South. It would also guarantee the existence of slavery in the slave states by preserving it in the According to Goodheart, the director of the Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College, Crittenden was a leading moderate voice and most senior member in the Senate who “hated neither slaveholders nor [slavery-opposing] Republicans.” One Baltimore minister penned his hopes on Crittenden to save the country. “The eyes of all good men in all sections are turned toward you,” wrote the minister in a letter to Crittenden. “The prospect looks dark, but the God of our Fathers will I bel...

Why Is Illinois Called the "Land of Lincoln"? (with pictures)

Prior to entering politics, Lincoln was a lawyer who was based in Springfield, Illinois. "Land of Lincoln" is not a reference to the president’s birthplace, as many people assume. He was born in 1809 in a cabin about 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Hodgenville, Kentucky. In 1816, he and his family moved to Indiana. It was not until 1830 that he moved with his family to Illinois, where he tried his hand at a number of professions before turning to political life. It was Lincoln's political service that forged the connection between Illinois and its favorite adopted son. Lincoln's political service in Illinois lead to the state being called the "Land of Lincoln." In 1832, Lincoln made his first bid for public office in the Illinois General Assembly. That attempt was unsuccessful, but two years later, he won, beginning the first of four terms in the state legislature. In 1846, he won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, and in 1847 began his single term there. He also ran for the U.S. Senate in 1858, where he won the popular vote but lost the election.

Crowds gathered in front of the Capitol building in Montgomery, Alabama, the day that the secession bill was passed. The force of events moved very quickly upon the election of Lincoln. South Carolina acted first, calling for a convention to secede from the Union. State by state, conventions were held, and the Confederacy was formed. Within three months of Lincoln's election, seven states had seceded from the Union. Just as Springfield, Illinois celebrated the election of its favorite son to the Presidency on November 7, so did Charleston, South Carolina, which did not cast a single vote for him. It knew that the election meant the formation of a new nation. The Charleston Mercury said, "The tea has been thrown overboard, the revolution of 1860 has been initiated." South Carolina Ordinance of Secession We, the people of the State of South Carolina, in convention assembled, do declare and ordain, and it is hereby declared and ordained, That the ordinance adopted by us in convention on the twenty-third day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty-eight, whereby the Constitution of the United States of America was ratified, and also all acts and parts of acts of the General Assembly of this State ratifying amendments of the said Constitution, are hereby repealed; and that the union now subsisting between South Carolina and other States, under the name of the "United States of America," is hereby dissolved.
