World's largest iceberg is no more after being ripped apart in 'iceberg graveyard

The fragments of the world's largest iceberg A-76A captured by NASA's Terra satellite on May 24. South Georgia island is also visible in this image but is covered in snow and partially obscured by cloud. (Image credit: NASA Earth Observatory/MODIS/Wanmei Liang) The world's largest iceberg is no more. The enormous chunk of ice, which was around twice the size of Los Angeles, has fractured into multiple city-size slabs, new satellite images show. The iceberg, known as A-76A, was the largest remaining piece of a Rhode Island-size slab that broke off from Antarctica's Ronne Ice Shelf in May 2021. In October 2022, satellite images revealed that A-76A, which measured around 84 miles (135 kilometers) long and 16 miles (26 km) wide at the time, had moved into a stretch of water known as the Drake Passage, where icebergs are often swept away from Antarctica by powerful ocean currents. On May 24, NASA's Terra satellite captured a new image of six sizable chunks of A-76A drifting away from one another near South Georgia island in the Scotia Sea, suggesting that the big berg had fragmented several days prior to the image being captured, according to NASA's Earth Observatory. The iceberg's fragments were around 1,500 miles (2,415 km) from the point where A-76 snapped away from Antarctica in 2021. "It is impressive to think it 'sailed' that far in about two years," Christopher Shuman, a glaciologist at the University of Maryland and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, told NASA Earth Ob...

Before this one, the Saturn contains only 62 moons, which is less than Jupiter having 79 natural satellites. Are there 79 natural satellites? On the other hand, A natural satellite is any celestial body in space that orbits around a larger body. Moons are called natural satellites. Moons orbit the planted. Jupiter has the largest number of moons, the number of moons is 79, Saturn the second highest number of moons (62). How many natural satellites are there in the solar system? Moons – also known as natural satellites – orbit planets and asteroids in our solar system. Earth has one moon, and there are more than 200 moons in our solar system. See also What is one of the paradoxes of time travel? Which planet has more natural satellites? Saturn has overtaken Jupiter as the planet with the most moons, according to US researchers. A team discovered a haul of 20 new moons orbiting the ringed planet, bringing its total to 82; Jupiter, by contrast, has 79 natural satellites. The moons were discovered using the Subaru telescope on Maunakea, Hawaii. Which planet has no satellite? Of the terrestrial (rocky) planets of the inner solar system, neither Mercury nor Venus have any moons at all, Earth has one and Mars has its two small moons. In the outer solar system, the gas giants Jupiter and Sa...
