The President of India is the nominal head of the executive and also the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. The office was first created when India became a republic on January 26 1950, the year the Constitution of India came into force. The President is elected indirectly by an electoral college comprising both Houses of Parliament and the legislative assemblies of each state. Rajendra Prasad was the first president of India. He was in office between January 26 1950 and May 13 1962. He was succeeded Sarvepalli Radhakrishna. India has had 14 Presidents till date and the only woman to hold the post was Pratibha Patil in the year 2007. Ram Nath Kovind in office currently is the 14th President of India.
