The Reason Willem Dafoe Needed A Body Double On Antichrist Might Surprise You

Few films have bothered to delve into the true nature of despair the way "Antichrist" does. Depression is an intruder that warps its victims into accepting a worldview wherein nothing has light or purpose, least of all its host. "Antichrist" looks hard at that despair, then looks closer, and continues to look closer for several more minutes after you desperately want to look away. It is confrontational and difficult, but it is certainly powerful. Because sex and sexuality are such pervasive themes of "Antichrist," and because so much of the drama comes from the two leads' sexual relationship to one another, a good deal of nudity was required from both actors. One of the first shots of "Antichrist" is a closeup of sexual penetration, shot in black and white, and projected in super slow-motion. The body parts in question, as one might assume, did not belong to Gainsbourg or Dafoe, both having used body doubles (It's worth noting that Von Trier once oversaw his own adult film studio, which had In "No, it's not mine. Lars used a porn actor for those scenes. It was a good decision because, if it was me, then that's all that people would talk about. Obviously Lars wants the characters to have genitals, but it would become a distraction: 'Oh, they really had sex!' If he had asked me to do it, I don't know what I would have said." Dafoe also pointed out in the same interview that Dafoe and Gainsbourg are both married, and having unsimulated sex on camera would perhaps bring up sti...

The Untold Truth Of Willem Dafoe

Willem Dafoe is one of the most versatile and impressive actors in the game. Writer-director Paul Schrader, who's worked with Dafoe on several projects, told , "I have always loved working with Willem because he has all the tools and skills and experience and clarity and confidence you could ask for. But he is also up for virtually anything." As the story went, Dafoe interviewed three different students for a class as an experiment in video editing. Dafoe described them as a Satanist, a nudist, and someone interested in legalizing pot. He claimed that he would've edited out any of the problematic sections, such as shooting the nudist in the nude ... or the section where the Satanist brought out his pornography collection ... or the legal marijuana advocate naming students that he'd sold drugs to. Unfortunately, Dafoe's teacher found the unedited footage and thought he was shooting a pornographic film. As a result, Dafoe was kicked out of school and left his hometown shortly afterwards. Cimino expanded Dafoe's role throughout the shoot, and for a while, it seemed like Dafoe had faked his way to fame and fortune. But his big break came to an abrupt end one day. He was standing with the rest of the cast for a lighting setup, a process that took eight hours. To break the boredom, one of the actresses whispered a dirty joke in Dafoe's ear. It must have been a good one, because he started laughing, and he wasn't whispering about it either. It was at least loud enough for Cimino ...

Willem Dafoe

After his attention-grabbing performance as a vicious counterfeiter in "To Live and Die in L.A." (1985), actor Willem Dafoe soared to stardom and earned an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor in the Academy Award-winning "Platoon" (1986). Prior to that performance, Dafoe used his menacing features and languid delivery to create an air of intensity for a succession of roles as toughs and villains, including in "The Loveless" (1981) and "Roadhouse 66" (1984). Following his breakthrough, however, the actor delivered a string of compelling performances, and even courted controversy as Jesus in "The Last Temptation of Christ" (1988). Throughout his entire career, Dafoe moved easily between showy character turns like a hard-drinking paraplegic in "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989) and leading roles like T.S. Eliot in "Tom & Viv" (1994). Occasionally, he turned on the camp to play over-the-top villains in "Speed 2: Cruise Control" (1997) and the "Spider-Man" series. But he also turned in high-caliber performances, as he did playing German actor Max Schreck in "Shadow of the Vampire" (2000), which showcased the wealth of talent he had displayed throughout his varied career.
