Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey Review

A whimsical then wicked pencil-doodled introduction sets the grim fairytale tone in the right way and we're ready to get ridiculous… yet it's all downhill from that inventive opening. Writer-director Rhys Frake-Waterfield's Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey is the next rickety float in a parade of low-budget horror movies getting our hopes up with insane titles that spark initial intrigue but can't deliver. There's no honor standing next to such examples as The Mean One or Ahockalypse, which adapted The Grinch and a Goon-style hockey story, respectively, to weak and largely unfunny horror comedies. When it comes to mutilating the beloved children’s book character into a slasher, Blood and Honey is a failure across the board, not only in its writing and acting but also from cinematography to editing, except for a few gnarly character deaths. In Frake-Waterfield’s macabre reinvention of A.A. Milne's beloved Winnie the Pooh children’s stories, doom and gloom is a theme that starts on the right foot. Christopher Robin still exists, Winnie the Pooh’s crew still inhabits the 100 Acre Wood, but everything goes south when Christopher leaves for college – a smart play on Pooh seeing Christopher’s maturation as abandonment and creating a vengeful motive for his Jason Voorhees-style murder spree. It’s an origin story that sparks initial intrigue… but that fades quickly as execution flounders. Play Yes, the kills are approvably vicious, and they’re just about the only thing that makes ...

“If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise.” The once-magical lyrics of the children’s song “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic” turn into an ominous warning in the opening credits of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, in theaters Feb. 15. Written and directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield ( The Area 51 Incident, Firenado), Blood and Honey follows a deformed Pooh (Craig David Dowsett) and Piglet (Chris Cordell) as they descend into a murderous rampage after Five years later, Christopher Robin returns to the woods with his wife Mary (Paula Coiz) in hopes of introducing her to his childhood friends and proving they weren’t imaginary. Instead, the couple is terrorized by the anthropomorphic monsters that Pooh and Piglet have become, and a brutal killing spree begins. The Pooh and Piglet of Blood and Honey are a far cry from the beloved characters created by English author A.A. Milne and later adapted for film and television by Disney—and have generated quite the controversy. Frake-Waterfield told the Courtesy of ITN Studios and Jagged Edge Productions So how exactly did the R-rated Blood and Honey come to be? Although Winnie-the-Pooh entered the public domain on Jan. 1, 2022. That means that Milne’s original story, as well as illustrator E.H. Shepard’s drawings of Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo, Owl, Eeyore, and Christopher Robin, all became fair game for any and all types of adaptations following the end of the 95-year copyright protection term.
