Your Name movie review & film summary (2017)

“I feel like I’m always searching for something, someone.” Haven’t we all felt that at some point in our lives? A sense of displacement from our daily lives, and a search for something that would anchor us to a more commonly perceived sense of normalcy? The Japanese phenomenon “Your Name” (it was the highest grossing film of last year in the country and the highest grossing anime film of all time worldwide, passing " Writer/director One day, Taki wakes up and looks down to see breasts. He’s in Mitsuha’s body. The next day, Mitsuha wakes up back in her own form but with only vague memories of the day before. And, of course, the same thing happens in reverse. Mostly through discussions with people around them about how weird they were acting, Mitsuha and Taki figure out that they’re switching places randomly, only after sleep. Rather than get into wacky hijinks like an ‘80s Disney movie, they work to help each other, leaving each other notes and diaries about what happened when they switched places. For example, Mitsuha has the courage to talk to the girl Taki likes, serving as a sort of body-switching Cyrano de Bergerac. But one day, they stop switching, and Taki can’t get a hold of Mitsuha in any way. He has vague memories of vistas from Mitsuha’s life and he sets out to try to find her. This is when “Your Name” becomes something very unexpected. To say that “Your Name” is visually striking would be a giant understatement. Shinkai and his team have both an eye for detail a...

Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.)

Synopsis Mitsuha Miyamizu, a high school girl, yearns to live the life of a boy in the bustling city of Tokyo—a dream that stands in stark contrast to her present life in the countryside. Meanwhile in the city, Taki Tachibana lives a busy life as a high school student while juggling his part-time job and hopes for a future in architecture. One day, Mitsuha awakens in a room that is not her own and suddenly finds herself living the dream life in Tokyo—but in Taki's body! Elsewhere, Taki finds himself living Mitsuha's life in the humble countryside. In pursuit of an answer to this strange phenomenon, they begin to search for one another. Kimi no Na wa. revolves around Mitsuha and Taki's actions, which begin to have a dramatic impact on each other's lives, weaving them into a fabric held together by fate and circumstance. [Written by MAL Rewrite] Story: 7 Art: 10 Sound: 9 Character: 7 Enjoyment: 10 Overall: 9 I watched this film at Anime Expo 2016 Los Angeles. I'll try to keep my review as spoiler-less as possible. TL;DR: ... The film holds true to all the expectations of a Makoto Shinkai production, from heartfelt smiles to crying the 5th time within the last 30 minutes. His signature metaphorical use of trains, the idea of a hopeless and distant love, and beautiful scenery really dive you emotionally into the story, even for how generic and simple it may seem. Story: 7 The story is fairly straightforward; It's very easy to guess where the story will head, but that doesn't m...

Your Name: Real

Makoto Shinkai's 2016 hit film, Your Name (君の名は, Kimi no na wa) captured the heart of millions. It toppled Hayao Miyazaki's Relive the tale of star-crossed lovers, Taki and Mitsuha by going on a Your Name pilgrimage and visit the real-life locations (or locations that inspired many parts of the film) all in Tokyo. The National Art Centre The restaurant that Taki and Okudera-senpai dined at during their date is called "Salon de the Rond" and is located on the second floor of The National Art Centre. To get a better view, I suggest going up to the third floor. The restaurant opens at 11AM. Photo: Above: Jianne Soriano Below: © 2016 Your Name, Film Partners. Yotsuya Station For their date, Taki and Okudera-senpai meet up at Yotsuya Station. To get a better view, take the Akasaka exit and look back. Unfortunately, there was construction going on when I visited so the actual part of the station that is in the film did not have the "Yotsuya Station" sign (the right side) so I opted for the other side. Photo: Above: Jianne Soriano, Below: © 2016 Your Name, Film Partners. The intersection also appears in the film; however, there was construction going on when I went so I was not able to take a shot. But walking further, you'll recognize this spot which is also in the film when Taki was finding the way ( Photo: Above: Jianne Soriano, Below: © 2016 Your Name, Film Partners. Keep walking and you'll finally spot a flight of stairs with red railings. Stairs to Suga Shrine The stairs to...

Mitsuha and Taki are two total strangers living completely different lives. But whenMitsuha makes a wish to leave her mountain town and for the bustling city of Tokyo, they become connected in a bizarre way. She dreams she is a boy living in Tokyo whileTaki dreams he is a girl from a rural town he’s never been to.What does their newfoundconnection mean? And how will it bring them together? Nodachiiiii Aug 27, 2016 10 Okay so the movie premiered in Japan yesterday and I went to watch it today.I should admit that I was thinking this is going to be one of Shinkai Makoto'sregular movies, where nothing really makes sense, but everything is so beautiful, animation is astounding, music is emotional, and for some reason you are left with tears, some bittersweet emotions, etc.Shinkai Makoto is one of my favourite directors, if not THE favourite, but I usually don't like his stories as much as the mood he creates. I am always left with some sort of disappointment in the end. But that doesn't keep me from adoring his works.「君の名は」had been advertised as hell in Japan for the past 2 months or so. Even in the university we got advertisements for Shinkai Makoto's upcoming movie. So it was kind of a given you'd want to go watch it asap. Just like I did. Now, I'm not going to talk about the story itself, since most of you guys won't be able to watch it until the DVD/BD are released, which usually takes a year or something. I am just going to say that this was absolutely, by all means Shikai's...
