After forty-eight years of Bangladesh's independence, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs published a 'list of Razakars' on December 15, a day before the country's 49th Victory Day. Well, the ministry concerned sent two letters to the home ministry and all 64district commissioners on 21 May and 28 August 2019 respectively. During the liberation wartime, Pakistan planned to recruit 50,000 Razakars and 12,000 to 15,000 Al-Badr and Al-Shams members. However, finally 35,000 Razakars were recruited but no numbers on the recruitments of Al-Badr and Al-Shams members. A prominent Liberation War researcher ASM ShamsulArefin has already published books with the names of 12,000 Razakars.He prepared the list from the salary sheet of Razakars recruited by the police. The governmentwas planning to publish the list of Razakars in phases. In the first phase, they planned to publish the names of 11,000 Razakars. Eventually, they published a list with the names of 10,789 Razakars who collaborated with the Pakistan occupation army in carrying out mass killings and atrocities against the Bangalees during the 1971 Liberation War. Which has created a country-wide controversy? Because,on the list of Razakars there were at least 24 freedom fighters and organizers of the Liberation War.
