IND vs AUS, WTC Final

In the first innings, Ajinkya Rahane took the catch to dismiss Australian skipper Pat Cummins off a Mohammed Siraj delivery. This was Rahane's 100th catch as an outfielder in Test Matches. He now becomes the 8th player from the country to reach the three-figure mark in catches. He just needs 5 more catches to overtake Mohammad Azharuddin in the list of most catches by an Indian in Test Cricket. Coming back to the match, Australia managed to put on a mammoth total of 469 in the first innings, courtesy of a 285-run stand for the fourth wicket between Travis Head and Steve Smith. While Head top scored with 163, Smith brought up his 31st Test century managing to put on 121. India have been on the back foot ever since the start of the second innings. They have lost 4 wickets for 98 runs, with Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja currently on the crease.

Ajinkya Rahane Profile

Ajinkya Rahane is a top-order Mumbai batsman who, with 1089 runs in his second Ranji season, was a crucial factor in Mumbai's 38th title win. Only 11 players have scored 1000 runs in a single Ranji season, and that puts his effort in perspective. Rahane's progression to the Mumbai Ranji team was a natural one - he had represented them at all age levels, and was always seen as a prospective Mumbai player if not more. His bumper Ranji season followed an impressive showing in the 2007-08 Duleep Trophy, where he scored 172 against an England Lions attack that comprised Graham Onions, Monty Panesar, Steve Kirby and Liam Plunkett. That innings came after followers of Mumbai cricket had started to write him off as a a fine talent but fit only to make a swift 50. Two years later, he had shown they were way off. He continued to churn out the runs in domestic cricket, hitting three hundreds each in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons of the Ranji Trophy. Two centuries in the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia brought him a place in the India ODI squad for the tour of England in 2011. After months of sitting on the bench and travelling with the Test squad, Rahane got his debut in Delhi in March 2013. In only his third Test, Rahane scored fifties in each innings in Durban before making his maiden Test century against New Zealand in the drawn Test in Wellington. Rahane then was at the forefront of India's first win in Lords after 28 years, setting the game up with a solid 103 in the ...

Since then Rahane has been telling himself, and us, to be in the moment. And that nothing else matters. Whether he has featured in 80-plus Tests, led India with distinction whenever the opportunity arose, or played some great knocks over the years. Or that he was grinding it out for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, or scoring runs at a breakneck speed for Chennai Super Kings in their recent IPL triumph. None of that matters. But when Rishabh Pant hit the winning runs in Brisbane to help India win the series 2-1, and virtually every Indian player charged onto the field to celebrate, Rahane stayed behind the boundary line. The Mumbai school of cricket has ingrained in him to not be loud in celebration, instead let his bat make all the noise. Immediately upon arrival, Rahane faced an incisive spell from Cummins, including one of the best deliveries of the match. Pitching around fourth stump, on the fuller side of the good-length band, the ball seamed in. Rahane, who was rooted in his crease, was forced to play but the ball straightened just a wee bit to beat his outside edge and rap him on the back thigh. It was in line with off stump, and umpire Richard Illingworth didn't hesitate in raising his finger. But Cummins had overstepped. The four earlier in the over was already a distant memory. It had taken him to 17, where Rahane would stay stuck for 23 balls. But he was not worried. After facing the white Kookaburra for two months in the IPL, and adjusting to the varying lengths, un...
