Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) Review

Editors' Note: This is the most recent version of the Amazon Fire HD 10. Read our original review from June 9, 2021 below. The 2021 version of Amazon's Fire HD 10 packs all the performance you need for web browsing, content consumption, and smart-home management. Amazon's limited app selection keeps it from broadly competing with general-purpose tablets such as This review covers the core feature set and capabilities of the Fire HD 10, 2021 edition. We also have separate reviews of the Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. (Opens in a new window) Deep in the Amazon Ecosystem The Fire tablets have always been about consuming Amazon content. They started out as the "Kindle Fire," intended for reading color books and streaming video. The mission has expanded, but only slightly; you can certainly play games and join Zoom calls on these tablets, but Amazon will drive you, again and again, to the videos and books it wants you to buy. As with any bundle of features and accessories, whether it makes sense to get one of the variant models depends on whether you want everything it contains. The Kids and Kids Pro also get an Editors' Choice nod from us; we think they're the best kids' tablets you can get for less than $200, with sturdy cases and excellent parental controls. The Plus is terrific if you need an Alexa smart display as well as a tablet and are willing to shell out for a wireless dock. On the other hand, the...

Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus review

You’re still stuck with Amazon’s FireOS, which means limited access to Android apps. The performance isn’t going to be on par with premium devices, and it’s a little bland, aesthetically. But if you’re willing to accept a few compromises, maybe that’s okay: the Fire HD 10 Plus offers stellar battery life, a decent display, and enough performance to make for a great value. Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus review: Price and availability • Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus (2021) at Amazon for $149.99 The Fire HD 10 Plus starts at $179.99 for the 32GB model. You can double the storage capacity to 64GB for $219.99, but the tablet supports up to 1TB microSD cards, which could prove to be a better deal — especially if there are sales. The base model serves up ads on the lockscreen, and you’ll need to pay $15 to get a model that’s ad-free. It’s worth the expense, though variants without ads seem to suffer from availablity issues (a situation I frequently encounter while shopping for Kindles); you can pay a fee to remove those after the fact, if you don’t want to wait. Amazon also offers a “productivity bundle,” which includes a 12-month subscription to Microsoft 365 Personal, and includes a bluetooth keyboard case. I’d be hard pressed to reach for a Fire tablet over an iPad or a Surface when I need to get things done, but there’s enough power here to make it useful in a pinch. Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus review: Design Amazon’s Fire HD 10 Plus is inoffensive. That’s not exactly high praise but, aesthetica...

The 2021 edition of Amazon's Fire HD 10 Plus tablet ($179.99) adds some RAM and wireless charging to the base-model Fanning the Fire's Flames Amazon has a bewildering array of Fire HD 10 varieties this year, but they're all the same tablet underneath the different accessories. You can read about the base Fire HD 10's features and capabilities in our Two features set the Fire HD 10 Plus apart: more RAM and wireless charging. (It also only comes in black, as opposed to the main model's array of colors.) When you purchase the Plus, Amazon gives you the option to add a $40 Anker wireless charging dock that completely changes your experience of using the tablet, enhancing its use as an Alexa interface while removing the hassle of remembering to plug it in. Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) Wireless charging gets rid of an annoying little bit of friction in that workflow. Chargers can move around and cables can be misplaced, plus you might just forget to plug it in. Dropping a tablet into a stand that coincidentally charges it is a much more fluid experience. The Fire HD 10 Plus falls short when being used as a music speaker, alas. The two speakers on the top of the tablet are loud enough, but they're painfully tinny, like listening to an old, battery-powered radio. On the iPad Pro, the Killers' "All These Things That I've Done" so...

Amazon Kindle vs Amazon Fire tablet: we'll help you understand the difference

Both of these families of devices are low-cost compared to their respective competitors and are popular with fans of cheap tech. However, even at a budget-friendly price if you pick up an ereader expecting a tablet or vice versa you'll likely be disappointed. Amazon Kindles are ereaders, using black-and-white E Ink screens, and they're designed for reading books, magazines, comics and audiobooks. Amazon Fire tablets are cheap The source of the confusion between these ranges, other than the 'Amazon' name in them, is that the name Amazon Kindle Fire was actually used until 2014, to refer to the slates we now call the Fire line, but now 'Kindle' is just exclusively for ereaders. If you're confused as to the difference between Amazon Fire tablets and Kindle devices, and the specific products in those lines (or want to know which of them is best for you) we're going to quickly compare the key differences so you can come to a decision. Amazon Kindle vs Amazon Fire tablet design and display The key difference between Amazon Kindle and Fire tablet devices is their screens. Kindle devices are ereaders, and therefore use E Ink screens - this technology basically replicates the way books look, with electric signals making ink appear where it needs to, to form writing or pictures. E Ink screens are monochromatic, so they don't show colors, just black and white. As a result, ereaders are designed for reading books and documents - you won't be able to use a Kindle to play games or watch...
