When Amitabh Bachchan took the political plunge

Amitabh Bachchan has struck an unusually low key in the Lok Sabha. But he has put into full use the advantage of being allotted a well-located bungalow on Delhi’s Motilal Nehru Marg, where he has already built up a formidable personal secretariat through which he stays in touch with what he describes as his “two constituencies” - Allahabad and the film industry. The matinee idol is never in want of worshippers even in his new incarnation. Sheetal, his private secretary, handles over a hundred telephone calls a day while his praetorian guards posted at the gate of the bungalow frisk as many people seeking an audience with Bachchan. The only difference from his days in the show business is that most of his new callers are not star-struck teenagers but middle-class and poor people from Allahabad, who come all the way with their petitions—for jobs, bank loans or irrigation facilities on their fields. Four of his six secretaries are detailed for his “Allahabad work”, which means processing individual applications, chasing letters written to Uttar Pradesh ministers and departmental officials, and replying to the public. The team has been set up not a moment too soon. Busy with completing the films he is committed to, Bachchan was conspicuous in his constituency by his absence, leading some enterprising electors sympathetic to a rival Congress (I) camp to file a complaint with the police about a ‘missing MP’! But if that was in the nature of a joke - with a sharp cutting edge - t...
