An Action Hero Movie Review: Slick combat scenes can't save Ayushmann Khurrana's film

An Action Hero movie review: Ayushmann Khurrana and Jaideep Ahlawat's much-awaited film An Action Hero has finally released. Anirudh Iyer's directorial couldn't grab the audience's attention with its humour and power-packed action scenes. If you are still planning to watch the film, read our review first. The film might tickle your bones with its low-key humour, but it moved at such a slow pace without even foot-tapping music. Walking into An Action Hero made me question myself why have them at all? It could be a good watch if it didn't leave my brain with a crick and a cramp because of innumerable twists and turns. If you're wondering did the excitement of how the story unravelled put you on the edge of your seat? The answer to the question forms the main part of An Action Hero, which is full of witty humour and packed action scenes. The evolving plot of what the future holds for the actor. Will he fight back and live up to the reel-life action hero he portrayed in his films? Or Manav will just give up at the end? With some bitter truths, a little bit of masala and commercial elements, the sub-plots were laced with a different climax at every moment and the team failed to weave them intricately within the storyline, which is a bit of a downer. However, the perfect comic timing and face-off scenes between Manav and Bhoora added a wow factor to the film. It's been years that Ayushmann Khurrana’s unconventional movie choices and relatable characters have been making us fall ...

An Action Hero Review: Ayushmann Khurrana And Jaideep Ahlawat Lend The Film Power

The title is absolutely apt. The fugitive protagonist of An Action Hero is indeed 'an' action hero and not 'any' action hero. And the film isn't any old actioner. Writer-director Anirudh Iyer employs genre devices to create a movie that, in a rare cinematic osmosis, is at once visceral and cerebral. The movie and the titular figure at its centre are both singular entities. They are, respectively, like nothing and nobody else that Indian audiences have seen in recent years. Rarely has a Bollywood action film been this much fun and seldom has a Hindi movie parodied the genre with such flair and intelligence. It takes its job very seriously but never stops laughing at itself and the purveyors of big-screen thrills. A RAW agent - he is one of two - who lands in London in the opening sequence to grill an on-the-lam Mumbai megastar Maanav (Ayushmann Khurrana) says at the fag-end of the story that the celeb narrates to the duo in the course of the interrogation: we are not sure if we should laugh at or be annoyed by the childishness of the yarn that you have spun. We know the answer. There is little doubt that the audience will opt more for the former than the latter reaction, given the jaunty pace of the narrative, the high-spirited set pieces that An Action Hero delivers as it unfolds at a heady pace, and the constant flow of provocative and topical ideas about showbiz, justice and nationhood. Anirudh Iyer deserves to be lauded for the acuity and candour with which he trains th...

An Action Hero Movie Review: Ayushmann Khurrana packs a punch in this average action thriller

An Action Hero Story: Maanav (Ayushmann Khurrana), a Bollywood megastar action hero and popular youth icon, falls from grace when he is caught up in a dramatic real-life incident that forces him to run for his life. An Action Hero Review: Anirudh Iyer's directorial debut delves into celebrity culture and the fickle side of fame. Most famous personalities are vulnerable to public backlash and media trials, and this works as the central theme of this 132-minute action-packed drama. On the face of it, 'An Action Hero' is a simple revenge story, but the screenplay transforms it into a twisted tale of a superstar, who finds himself in an extraordinary situation. It is a juicy plot, and Iyer, who has co-written the film with Neeraj Yadav, maintains a steady grip on the narrative for the most part. The film features Ayushmann Khurrana in a never-before-seen avatar. In contrast to his previous socially-relevant dramas, here, he plays Maanav, a buffed-up Bollywood action hero who wears his stardom on his sleeve. Soon, Maanav loses track of reality, especially when the antagonist, Bhoora Solanki (Jaideep Ahlawat), the Municipal Councillor of Mandothi village (Haryana), blames the star for his brother's mysterious death. As a result, they indulge in a cat-and-mouse game. Will the on-screen action hero be able to hold his own when hardcore action unfolds in his real life? Iyer takes a bit long in setting up the plot, most of the first half is spent on that. However, the second half pi...
