AP High Court allows trial of Dr Ramesh Babu in Swarna Palace fire accident case in Vijayawada

At least 10 people have been killed and 20 others injured in a fire accident at the Swarna Palace (Ramesh Hospital) hotel run by a private covid care center. Earlier, the High Court has stayed all further proceedings in the cases filed against Ramesh Hospital MD Dr. Pothineni Ramesh Babu and Chairman M Sitaram Mohana Rao who moved the court seeking dismissal of the case registered against them by the Governorpeta police in connection with the Swarna Palace fire incident case. Justice Donadi Ramesh issued interim orders to this effect. However, the Andhra Pradesh government has approached the Supreme Court challenging these orders. However, the police filed a petition to permit the trial, which was granted by the High Court. With this, Ramesh Babu, who had been away from the trial for the last few months in the Swarna Palace incident will have to appear before the police.

In a shocking incident, seven persons were killed in a fire that broke out at a paid Covid-19 Care Centre run from a hotel by a private hospital in Vijaywada early Sunday (9 August) morning, officials said. Officials earlier said three persons had died in the mishap, while four others were shifted to a hospital. With four more casualties, the death toll had increased to seven at the time of filing of the report. The victims included two women. Police officials did not rule out more casualties in the early morning fire as the condition of two of the centre’s staff, who jumped from the first floor to escape, is said to be serious. Around 50 persons, including 30 coronavirus patients, were reported to be present at the Covid treatment facility set up at Hotel Swarna Palace when the tragedy struck. City Police Commissioner Srinivasa Rao said that the fire broke out around 5:00am. According to initial information, suffocation due to smoke emanating from the fire is said to have caused most casualties. Firefighters were rushed to the spot who rescued the treatment centre’s inmates with the help of ladders and rushed them to nearby hospitals in 15 ambulances. VIJAYAWADA: The Hospital Chief Operating Officer (COO) Dr. Kodali Rajagopala Rao, in charge of the COVID-19 care center in Swarna Palace, Ramesh Hospital GM doctor K Sudarshan, COVID-19 care center coordinating manager Venkatesh P were sent to 14-day police remand. The police shifted them to Machilipatnam special sub-jail. According to preliminary investigation into the fire mishap, officials said that the fire accident took place in the hospital due to negligence of the management and lack of safety measures. At least 10 COVID-19 patients were killed and several others sustained injuries in the fire. The facility was used as COVID-9 treatment care centre. On Monday, three special teams comprising officers and police conducted inspections on Ramesh hospitals, including Swarna Palace. According to the municipal guidelines, the inspection team found irregularities in the construction of the building and the hospital is overcrowded with patients, charging unusually high fees in lakhs of rupees from patients. An ambulance carrying a patient caught fire injuring a person and destroying tobacco worth Rs 40 lakh. The incident occurred in Andhra Pradeh's Prakasam district late on Monday. The 108 ambulance was carrying a patient for dialysis from Rajasahebpeta village to a hospital. After covering some distance, driver Tirupati Rao noticed smoke in his cabin. He immediately stopped the ambulance and alerted his colleague Madhusudhan Reddy. The latter helped the patient and his mother accompanying him to get down. The fire, which apparently broke out due to a short circuit, soon spread to the entire vehicle. An oxygen cylinder kept in the ambulance exploded and under its impact some burning material of the vehicle fell on a nearby shed where farmers had stored tobacco. The entire stock was reduced to ashes. A person standing near the shed also suffered burn injuries. He was shifted to a hospital. The incident sent panic among people in the area. A doctor and his two children were killed in a fire that broke out at a newly constructed private hospital at Renigunta in Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati district on Sunday. Dr Ravishankar Reddy and his son, Bharat and daughter, Kartika lost their lives. His wife Dr Ananta Lakshmi and mother were rescued by the locals. A huge fire broke out in Renigunta early in the morning. Two fire tenders rushed to the hospital and doused the fire. The fire broke out in Karthikeya Hospital, which was being constructed in Renigunta's Vasantha Nagar in the early hours of the morning. In the massive fire accident, 3 people including two children died. Police and fire personnel reached the spot and doused the fire. The firefighting personnel shifted Bharat, 12, and Kartika, 15, to another hospital where they succumbed to burn injuries. The condition of the doctor's wife and mother is believed to be stable.
