Jonny Bairstow Profile

Jonny Bairstow, the son of the former England wicketkeeper David Bairstow, is a combative wicketkeeper-batter who has become a cricketer to be reckoned with in England's middle order. The journey was far from easy for Bairstow, especially with Jos Buttler in contention for the gloves, but prolific run-making for Yorkshire eventually made a case that England's selectors could not ignore. Galvanised by his selection, runs flowed. Bairstow's wicketkeeping has rarely met with universal approval and, much to his chagrin, the debate about whether he might be better playing as a specialist batter has never been silenced. But from the moment that he delivered an emotional maiden Test century in Cape Town, where his father had strong off-season links, he began to make a significant mark with England. Nothing could compare with his impact on the one-day team, where his peerless opening partnership with Jason Roy helped deliver England a first World Cup success in 2019. He has had to fight against a tendency to play across the line and, to that end, he stands tall, bat held aloft, adding to his pugnacious image. Driven and independently minded, he is very much his own man. Intensive work with Bruce French, England's wicketkeeping coach, has also made his keeping more secure. Bairstow was a talented all-round sportsman at an early age, even having trials with Leeds United as a right back. But it was cricket which soon dominated. An early starter with Yorkshire's Under-15s, he was name...

Jonny Bairstow to miss IPL and focus on Ashes in recovery from freak accident

Photograph: Christopher Lee/Getty Images for PCA But the No date has been set but Brendon McCullum, England’s Test head coach, said in December that Bairstow will return to his side when fully fit. Both he and the captain, Ben Stokes, have since admitted that a significant selection headache will be the upshot, however, as they plan for an Ashes campaign that starts on 16 June at Edgbaston. Bairstow glowed with form in the middle order last season, four centuries in five innings against New Zealand and India living out the positivity ordered by Stokes and McCullum and kickstarting the team’s run of 10 wins in 12 Tests. But in the last six of those Harry Brook, Bairstow’s fellow Yorkshireman, deputised at No 5 in similarly jaw-dropping fashion, cracking four centuries in his first six appearances and finding himself spoken of as a generational talent. As such, a reshuffled batting order will be required and all eyes will be on whether Bairstow even keeps wicket during his domestic comeback to open an alternative route in. After the recent 1-1 draw in New Zealand, McCullum has said the team will be “brave” in selection but added: “What we can’t do is try and crowbar people in.” Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. Bowlers James Anderson and Ollie Robinson, who are nursing slight injuries, have been rested before this summer's Ashes series. Tongue was added to England's squad for the first Test of the summer after impressing with the England Lions during February's tour of Sri Lanka. The selectors have preferred the young seamer to Woakes, 34, who was fit to play after returning from knee surgery. England head coach Brendon McCullum discussed Tongue's inclusion in Monday's media briefing, saying: "He's got some real skills, he's obviously a bit of rough diamond. Jonny Bairstow: England batter ruled out of third Test and T20 World Cup

The 32-year-old slipped walking to a tee box and will see a specialist to ascertain the extent of the injury. Bairstow confirmed on his Instagram account that he will need surgery. Nottinghamshire's Ben Duckett has been added to the squad for the series-deciding Test at the Kia Oval. The Yorkshireman has been in brilliant form in 2022, scoring 1,061 runs and six centuries in 10 Tests, and remains a key part of England's white-ball teams. Earlier on Friday he was named in England's squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia, which begins for England on 22 October, with managing director Rob Key confirming Bairstow was set to open the batting. Instead, a replacement for the 15-man group must be found, with the England and Wales Cricket Board confirming that an announcement will be made in due course. Ex-England spinner Alex Hartley, speaking on BBC Two, said: "It's devastating news, he has been so good for England this summer. To sustain a freak injury playing golf is such a blow for England, but more importantly for Bairstow." With Bairstow missing, his Yorkshire team-mate Harry Brook could be in line to make his Test debut against South Africa. The 23-year-old has been part of the England squad throughout the summer and will now compete with left-hander Duckett for a place in the XI. Duckett, 27, is also an option to replace Bairstow in the World Cup squad. He is one of three batters included in the touring party to take on Pakistan later in September not named in the tourna...

Bairstow defends decision to play in the IPL instead of County Championship

Jonny Bairstow has defended his decision to play in the Indian Premier League instead of the early stages of the County Championship after blitzing 136 runs off 92 balls on the final day of the second Test against New Zealand to swing the game in England’s favour and earn himself the player of the match award. Bairstow returned to England on 23 May following his stint with Punjab Kings in the IPL, giving him just 10 days to reacclimatise to red-ball cricket and prepare for the start of the Test summer. He then scored one and 16 in the two innings of the first Test at Lord’s and eight in the first innings of the second, before clicking spectacularly Read more “A lot of people were saying I shouldn’t be at the IPL and I should be playing county cricket,” Bairstow said. “But you are playing against the best in the world at the IPL. Being able to have those gears, to be able to switch them up and switch them down, is important. People say it would be fantastic if you had four games of red-ball cricket under your belt. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen in the current scheduling of everything and we’re very fortunate to be able to play in some of the best competitions against the best players in the world. “When it comes to pressure situations, the more you’re able to put yourself under pressure the better. Because it’s those situations that you’ve gone through in the past, whether that be in the IPL, in one-day cricket or in red-ball cricket, that you’re able to call upon on e...
