A variation of the Saudi-Egyptian Super Cup was played this year as the Lusail Super Cup between Al-Hilal and Zamalek to help warm up the World Cup final stadium. The Arab Champions Cup was last played in 2020, and this brings it back in 2023 with the same format and prize money. Similarly, the GCC club cup hasn't been scheduled since cancelled editions in 2016 and 2017. Now that Qatar and its neighbours look to be on friendly terms again, this revives the competition from next year. The latter two tournaments exclude active teams in the AFC and CAF continental cups, and now function as secondary and tertiary trophies like the Europa and Conference Leagues. Overlapping matchweeks with the ACL means fixture pile-up is minimized. RIYADH: The Union of Arab Football Associations announced the name of the Arab Club Champions Cup would be the King Salman Club Cup on Monday. The tournament will be held with preliminary qualifying system and then finals hosted by the Kingdom in the cities of Abha, Al-Baha and Taif. Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, President of the Arab Football Association, thanked King Salman for his approval to name the club championship, while extending his thanks and appreciation to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his interest in the Arab Federation and its competitions and programs. "The championship bears a name dear to all Arab athletes, and is considered among the Arab Federation's competitions for the 2023 season," Secretary-General of UAFA, Dr. Raja Allah Al-Salami, said. Raja Casablanca of Morocco has won the much-delayed final of the 2020 Arab Club Champions Cup after defeating Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad 4-3 on penalties at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. The final of the competition, also known as the Mohammed VI Champions Cup, went straight into a shootout, without extra time, after the two teams had played out an astonishing 4-4 draw in 90 minutes. Al-Ittihad flew out of the blocks by taking a fourth-minute lead through Bruno Henrique, but Ilias Haddad equalized for Raja only a minute later. Mahmoud Benhalib then put Raja 2-1 ahead with only 13 minutes on the clock, before Romarinho tied for Al-Ittihad in the 28th minute from the penalty spot. It would not be the last of the night. Zakaria El-Wardi scored for Raja eight minutes before the break to give the Moroccans a remarkable 3-2 lead at the break. The second half would prove just as dramatic. Sofiane Rahimi scored Raja’s fourth goal in the 50th minute, and for the first time on the night one of the teams had taken a two-goal lead. It would not be enough, however.
