Express View on Arvind Kejriwal’s speech: Maidan battlecry

On the face of it, the Aam Aadmi Party’s rally at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday was yet another battle cry in the prolonged face-off between the BJP-led Centre and AAP’s government in Delhi. The two parties have been at loggerheads since 2015 — the main reason is the Union government’s efforts to circumscribe the powers of Delhi’s elected government. This battle has been fought on various fronts — through street protests, by shrill spokespersons on prime time TV, and in the courts. With the Centre effectively over-ruling the Supreme Court decision granting control over “services” to the Delhi government through an ordinance last month, the AAP had little choice but to ratchet up its opposition to the Centre’s moves. Chief Minister Kejriwal’s Sunday speech was, however, about more than just his government being hemmed in. Also Read | “An ordinance like the one for Delhi is like the declaration of dictatorship. It will be brought in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh,” Kejriwal said. Linking the actions of the Centre in Delhi to its “authoritarian” and “dictatorial” tendencies in general, and to PM Modi’s “ahankaar” or arrogance in particular, Kejriwal tried to draw a line that folds in the Opposition’s common motifs and themes — undermining of the independence of institutions, attacks on federalism, constitution-under-siege: “The Supreme Court of India, the highest hall of justice in the land… said the elected government, the people’s will is supreme… [PM Modi] is th...

Arvind Kejriwal attacks Congress in Haryana amid call for Opposition unity

By Amit Bhardwaj: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seems to be refocusing itself on the general election campaign and expanding its organisational strength as Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann held a Tiranga Yatra in Haryana’s Jaat land, Jind. The two leaders played "the local card" during the Yatra. The AAP mobilised its workers not only from the three Lok Sabha constituencies influenced by Jind - Sonipat, Hisar and Sirsa - but also from the Rohtak belt and adjoining areas of Punjab. The lanes of Jind the Yatra went through were flooded with people carrying the national flag. The AAP, according to sources, planned the Tiranga Yatra to mark the start of the party's preparations for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and lay down the foundational work for the Haryana Assembly polls, scheduled for after the general elections next year. Kejriwal back to old strategy of attacking Congress, BJP Amid the talks for opposition unity, Kejriwal has avoided criticising the Congress. In fact, the AAP chief is hoping to meet Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi over the Delhi services ordinance issue. Later this month, they were expected to be a part of the united opposition meeting scheduled in Bihar. But Kejriwal chose to attack the Congress in Jind while taking potshots at the Manohar Lal Khattar government. "Has Congress ever told you that they will provide good education for your children?" Kejriwal asked while taking potshots at the Congress in Haryana. "I will fix the governmen...

Kejriwal promises ‘big’ bureaucratic reshuffle after SC verdict, warns officials

Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday promised “a very big” administrative reshuffle for a responsible, lean, thin, compassionate, accountable, and sympathetic administration and said officers involved in obstructing the people’s work will have to suffer. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. (PTI) Referring to the Supreme Court’s verdict earlier in the day that Delhi’s elected government will have the control of bureaucrats in the Capital, he said they have got a “huge opportunity” to work. “Now the work in Delhi will progress at 10 times the speed,” he said. “A very big administrative reshuffle will take place in the next few days.” He said transfers will be made on the basis of the work the officers have done. “Some officers, who in the last one and a half years obstructed the work of the people of Delhi, stopped the supply of medicines to mohalla clinics and hospitals, stopped water supply at some places...will have to suffer,” Kejriwal said at a press conference organised in view of the Supreme Court order. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has blamed top officials including chief secretary Naresh Kumar, and principal secretary (finance) Ashish Chandra Verma for obstructing its work. Arvind Kejriwal Says Delhi's Water Crisis To Be Resolved Within 2

New Delhi: Delhi's water crisis will be resolved within the next two-three years as the government is taking radical steps to tackle the problem, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Tuesday. In 2015, Delhi's water production stood at 850 million gallons per day (MGD). It has now increased to 1,000 MGD, he said at a press conference at the Delhi Secretariat. Mr Kejriwal said he has set an ambitious target to further enhance Delhi's water production capacity to a range of 1,200-1,300 MGD. Once this goal is achieved, Delhiites will no longer face water shortages, he added. To accomplish this, the government plans to install tubewells in areas with high water-tables, enabling the extraction of water on a large scale. Additionally, an innovative approach will be adopted to recharge groundwater by rejuvenating lakes with treated sewage treatment plant (STP) water, the chief minister said. The recharged water will undergo further treatment in reverse osmosis (RO) plants before being supplied to households, he said. To ensure the highest standards of sewage treatment, all STPs in Delhi are currently undergoing comprehensive upgrades, aiming to mitigate pollution and promote responsible water resource management, the CM said. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal seeks Gujarat HC to review its order on PM Modi's degree case – ThePrint –

New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has moved Gujarat High Court seeking a review of its order in March where it had set aside an order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) that had directed the varsity to “search for information” regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degrees. Justice Biren Vaishnav admitted the review petition and issued notice to Gujarat University, the Union government, the Chief Information Commissioner and former CIC M. Sridhar Acharyulu, who had passed the order. The next hearing is scheduled for June 30. In his review petition, Kejriwal said the postgraduate degree of Modi was not available on the website of the university or elsewhere in the public domain as claimed by the university and as submitted by Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta, who appeared on behalf of the university. “While the court had recorded that PM Modi’s degree is available on the varsity’s website following submissions to that effect by Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, representing the university, upon a scan of the said website…(it) is found that the said degree is not available, but a document referred to as OR (Office Register) is displayed,” the review petition moved by Kejriwal said. Pointing that Mehta had only orally submitted on the day of the hearing, that too for the first time, that the degree is available on the website, Kejriwal has pleaded that there was thus no opportunity for him to verify the oral submission and ...

‘When Arvind Kejriwal is in trouble…’: Omar Abdullah on why he won’t support Delhi CM against Centre's ordinance

Attacking Arvind Kejriwal for his alleged “silence" on Article 370 abrogation, Omar Abdullah said the Delhi chief minister had supported the Central government then. “Where was Arvind Kejriwal when Article 370 was scrapped? He supported the govt that time and today he is asking for support from other parties," Omar Abdullah said. Omar Abdullah said Arvind Kejriwal needs other parties’ support “when he is in trouble". Referring to the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of J&K into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh by the Central government, Omar Abdullah said, “I am repeatedly saying that when they need us, they knock on our doors. When [Arvind] Kejriwal is in trouble, he needs our support but where were these leaders in 2019 when we faced a big deceit." On the grand alliance, Omar Abdullah said, “Compulsions aside, I do not see any benefit from such an alliance for the party and Jammu and Kashmir." “What we have [to contribute] outside Jammu and Kashmir? We have a total of five (Lok Sabha) seats and what storm these seats can create? We have to fight against the BJP on these seats and what is going outside J&K is a secondary question," he said. However, he said there are only four parties – DMK, Mamata Banerjee-led TMC and two Left parties - "which always stood with the people of Jammu and Kashmir". CENTRE’S ORDINANCE FOR DELHI The Union government on May 19 brought an ordinance to notify rules for the Government of National Capital Territory of ...
