Independence Day 2022: What is Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav?

In his Mann ki Baat program last month, PM Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative was gaining momentum as a people's movement. In that program, he appealed to people to change their social media profiles to that of the tricolour between August 2-15. "August 2 is a special day... I have changed my social media DP and I urge you to do so," Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is based on five themes - Freedom, Ideas, Resolve, Actions and Achievements. Under the 'Freedom' theme, the government has focused on bringing out stories of unsung heroes who made sacrifices in India's freedom struggle. Some of the events organized under this theme include - Birsa Munda Jayanti, Shaheed Diwas, Declaration of Provisional Government of Free India by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, besides others. The much-celebrated, and, to an extent, politicized Har Ghar Tiranga campaign is also being carried out under this theme of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The 'Ideas' theme 'focuses on programmes and events inspired by ideas and ideals that have shaped the country and will guide India as the nation navigates through the 'period of Amrit Kaal', the next 25 years towards the 100th anniversary of India's independence. With events such as good governance week, Constitution Day and others, the 'Resolve' theme of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav aims to focus on collective resolve and determination to shape India's destiny by motivating individual citizens, civil society groups and organizations to play their role in nation-building. Dr...

'We Have Entered Into Amrit Kaal': What Does It Mean & Where Does It Originate From?

"We are marking Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav and have entered into Amrit Kaal, the 25-year-long leadup to India@100," Sitharaman said. She also said, "The Budget lays a parallel track of a blueprint for the Amrit Kaal, which is futuristic and inclusive, directly benefiting youth, women, farmers, the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes." So, where does the term 'Amrit Kaal' come from, and what does it mean? The Quint takes a look. The term 'Amrit Kaal' was first used by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi in 2021 during the 75th Independence Day celebrations, when he unveiled a new roadmap for the country for the next 25 years. Modi had said the purpose of Amrit Kaal was to improve the lives of the citizens of India, lessen the divide in development between villages and cities, reduce the government's interference in people's lives, and welcome the latest technology.

Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav: The deeper significance of India@75

“Amrit” means elixir, ambrosia, or nectar. Its secondary denotations include substances traditionally considered highly beneficial, ranging from water, ghee, boiled rice, gold, buttermilk, milk, sweets, to anything agreeable, desirable, beautiful, and life-enhancing. But the literal meaning of the word is simply “not dead.” “Amrit,” thus, is that which makes us immortal, indestructible, eternal. The Persian-Sanskrit combination of “azadi” with “amrit mahotsav” should not cause discomfort to purists. Not only does it acknowledge the linguistic and cultural fusion of diverse peoples in our past, but also serves to remind us that Sanskrit and Persian are, after all, sister tongues, with common roots going back to ancient close connections between Sanskrit and Avesta. More importantly, one might ask what does freedom have to do with immortality? Such a question can be addressed fruitfully only if we remember that India is not only a modern nation but an ancient civilisation. However, unlike other civilisations, despite its great material prosperity and scientific progress, classical India set the highest store by liberation. Gandhi was away in Calcutta, dousing the flames of communal hatred and internecine violence. For Aug. 14 was also the day of the bloody Partition and dismemberment of India. This year Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the nation to observe it as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. “Partition’s pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters an...

The Unsung Heroes Stories of India Amrit Mahotsav

Introduction In today's fast-moving world and tough competitive day-to-day life, the youth hardly find time for remembrance of our rich heritage and past. This becomes most crucial whilst the nation celebrates Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (commemoration of 75 years of Indian Independence). The fight against colonial rule in India constitutes a unique narrative, one which is not marred by violence. Rather a narrative that is full of variegated stories of valor, bravery, Satyagraha, dedication, and sacrifice across the length and breadth of the subcontinent. These stories compose the rich Indian cultural heritage and traditions. Thus, the unsung heroes need not necessarily define the lesser-known freedom fighters. They may, at times, be the leaders whose ideals delineate the Indian value system. The Section on Unsung Heroes is an attempt to recall and remember forgotten heroes of our freedom struggle, many of whom might be renowned yet unknown to the new generation. The aim of recreating and bringing forth stories, which lay as faded memories of the past, shall serve as a medium of inspiration and encouragement for the coming generations. India 2.0 is not just about fuelling the spirit of India in any one particular paradigm of growth. It encompasses all spheres of life, most of all by enriching our hearts and souls. The spirit of India is incomplete whilst we take our unsung heroes along this journey of growth and development. Their ethos and principles ought to be recalled and ...
